As stated in another complaint on this site, I am having Ignition problem. The Jeep will start, but then acts up and won't start/turn over. You play with it a few minutes and then it starts. The big problem is, it won't replicate the problem at the repair shop. I paid towing fees, the tow truck driver tried to jump it and could not, so it was towed to the shop. At the shop, he lowered the jeep and gave the mechanic key and it started right up. I left it there for two days, and it did not acted up. Since then, April until now (Aug), it has done it 4 times. Any Suggestion--can figure if it's the started or ignition? I am leaning toward ignition.

There is a well known problem with Jeep ignition systems or electrical called "start-stop." My 2008 Wrangler Sahara has encountered this issue for about 2 years now. Turn the key over and there is a "click." No starter engagement, but all lights, etc. work.

First encountered this issue back in about November of 2012. Took to the dealer initially and they could not decipher what the problem was- it did not occur when they checked it. I replaced the battery with a brand new Optima, checked all the electrical and performed other diagnostics. Even though I have a lifetime powertrain warranty, this is not covered, and they were going to charge me hundreds of dollars just to diagnose it. I decided I could live with it- perhaps some additional research would turn up that I could repair myself, or have an independent mechanic perform for much less than the dealership.

It is sporadic. I have read that it is a static buildup issue in the ignition column, or a range sensor in the transmission that is causing it. A supposed repair is to add another grounding cable to the battery. I tried that and it didn't work.

If I wiggle the transmission shifter while in park (AT), this generally will get it to start the first time. Also, you can shift the AT to neutral and then start. Pain in the ass as it is kind of embarrassing that a gremlin of this sort pops up whenever you have people in the car- they start to get worried that we are stranded.

IN the old days, a starter solenoid would die, or the battery would be drained for something of this nature to happen. Modern electronics in this Jeep are just no reliable, or rugged enough to handle everyday driving.

The 2008 Jeep Wrangler will not start, after you wait awhile it will finally start. This is an issue all over the web about the 2008 Wranglers. Something needs to be done about this from Jeep.

ON NUMEROUS OCCASIONS MY JEEP FAILS TO START. WHEN I INSERT THE KEY IN THE IGNITION AND TURN TO START, THE LIGHTS ON THE DASH LIGHTS UP WITH A SINGLE CLICK SOUND COMING FROM SOMEWHERE IN THE ENGINE COMPARTMENT. AFTER CONTINUOUSLY TRYING OVER AND OVER TO START THE JEEP IT WOULD FINALLY START. SOME DAYS IT WOULD TAKE HOURS TO START UP. THE PROBLEM OCCURS IN ANY WEATHER, DAY OR NIGHT. SOME DAYS THE JEEP STARTS UP FINE ON THE FIRST TRY, OTHER TIMES IT IS A NIGHTMARE AND TAKES ALL DAY TO START UP. I HAVE TAKEN THE JEEP TO THE JEEP DEALERSHIP BEFORE FOR A DIAGNOSTIC, BUT IT WAS USELESS AND A WASTE OF MONEY FOR ME SINCE THE PROBLEM IS STILL OCCURRING!

I bought the 2008 Jeep Wrangler in September 2007. I follow the service manual and take my Jeep for every scheduled service at the Jeep dealership. My Jeep started failing to start in 2010. I reported the issue at my 36,000 mile service on 23 November 2010 and was told that the service department could not isolate the problem. I have reported this issue on several services but was always told that the service department could not isolate the issue. Finally when I take the Jeep in for the 72,000 mile service the fault was identified and is currently under repair. If this has been a known issue why was I not notified of the problem by Jeep. I have been stranded on more that one occasion because the vehicle failed to start and I have been driving around for four years with a TIPM that could have failed causing injury to me or my family. I am very upset that Jeep has known about these issues and I was not informed that there was an issue with this TIPM when I reported the Jeep was having electrical problems. I had to stumble across a web site reporting this issue with the TIPM, this is how I found out that this is a known issue that Jeep has failed to acknowledge.

Very intermittent problem in that you turn the key and starter does not turn engine at all. You would be feeling it's the starter but instead it is the TIPM. I have not replaced the starter and it has work flawlessly. There are other problems that indicate the TIPM. Not fixed yet.

This has been an on going problem since I purchased my Jeep in 2008, it had gone away for a while but has started up again and with new problems this past weekend.

I came out to find my odometer flashing barely, was unable to start my vehicle so I popped open the hood and the fuse box was buzzing. I opened it to take a look and was able to feel the electricity pulsing. I ended up jumping my Jeep off another vehicle. I have had nothing but problems with this over the years with the battery draining and electrical problems and every time I take it to the dealer they say they can't find anything. And charge me $100-150 to wait for them to plug in to their computer to diagnose nothing when there is an obvious problem. My torch converter also blew on my Transmission last Summer 2011 which they tried to skate around fixing by asking me if I was sure if it was still under warranty.

All and all not happy or anywhere close to with the vehicle. I'm regretting buying this model.

My 2008 Jeep Wrangler periodically won't start. After a few attempts is will but some times it can take a long time of sitting and hoping. I have had a new battery, two new starters and just got it out of the shop yesterday. Problem is still there. I will be taking it back in on Monday. Shop is not sure what to do next but might change out the computer box. Has anyone had an issue like this and if so what was the fix.

btw - I had a new engine put in a few months ago due to water damage so you would think it would run like a champ but I had the problem prior to the new engine so it isn't related to the water damage....

Any help would be much appreciated...

Thank you

Never had any problems with my 2008 jeep wrangler until this spring when i went to start it and the starter slipped and i had to turn the ignition off and start it again. it started to get worse, it did it 5-6 times in a row and now i have to get my starter rebuilt. i cant believe that I'm already rebuilding my starter even though it has more use than normal, but it thought it would at least last until 200-250,000 km. not impressed.

My jeep wrangler unlimited i had for at least 1 year ran fine and then all of a sudden would not start all the time. Turn the key after a few times or after charging battery & would start. Then got to point that could not just jump & had to charge battery. Went & was told definitely the battery. Replaced battery. Fine for a few weeks and yet again still doing exact same thing. Apparently there is a draw on the battery when testing alternator and battery. Now have to take back to shop as told NOT the battery.

Bought used 2008 in April. Day of big off road trip would not start, seemed like dead battery. Chgd batt. That afternoon, intermittent no start resumed. No fun being stranded in middle of desert in AZ. Moved shift multiple times, would eventually start. Brought to two mechanics (neither a dealership). Both id'd starter as problem. Said starter motor had "dead spots." Speculated that starter is too close to exhaust system, gets too hot. Second mechanic spoke to bud at Jeep dealer. Said they chg lots of starters. Had starter replaced. So far no problems. Has anyone else heard this?

My Jeep has run perfectly for some time and now it is having problems starting. As if the battery is dead. I swapped out the battery and it worked for 3 dys. They tested my old battery and it was pretty dead. I took it to the dealer and they did a draw test and all kinds of other fun things.....they said the only thing they saw was some wires were a little loose/ 2 days after picking it up, it is back to starting every other time or so. Eventually it starts, but boy is this an embarrassing pain in the rear.

Update from Oct 4, 2011: Samantha...I have been to the dealer multiple times and of course it always works there. I have been doing more research online. I am coming to the conclusion, although not technically supported, that something is wrong with the actual shifter. Etiher the shifter is faulty or a foriegn object has gotten into the shifting mechanism. Like a coin was in the shifting area while in drive and then when put in park the coin was lodged inside and is no longer visable. The reason i say that, is that whenever my car won't start i simply, but agressively, push the shifter forward. even though it is park, i push it more...and the car then starts. I am thinking the coin might by my culprit since i use the tray just above the shifter for parking change. Since the car has been starting after pushing the shifter forward, again somewhat agressively, i haven't been back to the dealer. I do have a service coming up and i plan to bring that to their attention.

So my Jeep has a starting problem but to make a few days ago I stepped into my Jeep and turned the key. The car started and then turned off about thirty seconds later. I tried again and the car shut down after about fifteen seconds. I tried a third time the car would not crank. I continued to try and start the car but no luck. About twelve hours later I finally got the car started and I immediately took it to the dealer. When i got there I talked to the manager about the problem and he called the head mechanic. After I explained the story to him he asked if he could see the two keys that were issued by the sales department when I bought the car. He returned about ten minutes later and said while they did one of the repairs they had changed the cars ignition codes. (According to Jeep all of of the keys on their new cars have computer chips that sent messages to the engine as a security feature.) Apparently the mechanic who did the repair altered the key that I had brought to the shop but decided not to tell me or fix the second key that was originally issued to me. The mechanic claimed that becuase I used the key that they did not update the car's computer believed that it was being stolen and the car went into a lockdown mode and when that happens the car cannot be started for about twelve hours; even if the correct key is used. This problem was completely the dealers fault.

My car has had a starting problem since April. I have taken it to my dealer five times and they still have not fixed it. It seems like every time the i take the car to the dealer the problem gets worse. When the problem occured in the past it would take about five attempts to start my car, now I turn the key and nothing happens.

Update from Aug 15, 2010: Apparently when my dealer did one of the repairs they changed the key to my car, altered the key I dropped off but decided that it was not important that they should update the second key or notify me of the change. After hassling them the dealer did alter my second key but the starting problem still resumes.

Update from May 23, 2011: It seems that my new dealer has been able to repair my car. They replaced the range sensor. (I believe that it is also called the neutral safety switch) It has been two months and the car has been preforming as it should.

I stepped into my car and I turned the key. The car made a single thud sound and would not start. It took me five more trys but I finally got the car started. I took it to the dealer later that day. They kept the car for about three days then the dealer called me and said that the cars problem was cuased by my cars EZ pass. They claimed that the EZ pass was causing an electromagnetic interferance with the car. I removed the EZ pass from the car and the problem resumed a few days later.

Wrangler Rubicon V6

About 1000 miles away from the end of my warranty, my Jeep started to have major problems. Starting in June 2009, it started having trouble starting...after 3 visits to the dealership, they "fixed" the problem by replacing the camshaft sensor. After the third visit, the Jeep completely crapped out. When I went to start it to go to work, the sentry key would not open the door. After about 25 attempts, the door opened (I didn't want to open with the key and cause the alarm to go off) but the car would not start...but all the dash lights lit up, indicating to me it was not a battery problem.

I brought it back and they replaced the key sensor and keys. The day I picked it up from its 4th visit, as I was driving all of the dash lights started blinking and the warning sounds that usually happen when I open the door with the keys in it started to sound. When I turned off the Jeep, it would not restart.

I left it overnight and was able to drive it to the dealership, where it sits now. This will be 5th visit and I am 80 miles away from the end of my warranty. I have sent letters to Chrysler and the dealership and I hope they make things right...I'll keep you posted.

My husband has a 2006 and it is perfect...I suggest anyone reading this by a used Jeep (2006 or earlier) to avoid any weird problems.

Update from Sep 5, 2009: Dealership spent some time with the vehicle and determined that the issue was with the remote starter. The remote starter was replaced, and the problem has completely gone!

Update from Aug 18, 2010: I think that the issue may be a part in the transmission called the neutral safety switch. Since this is covered under my lifetime power train warranty...I am having trouble convincing the dealership to fix it...but in the meantime, if you get stuck and your Jeep won't start, give this a try. Hit the break, shift into neutral, shift back into park and then the Jeep should start. Hope that helps!

It has been a nightmare since day one! I definitely love the vehicle but the truth is... I got a lemon. Since new the "Check Engine" light came up. Dealer told me that the camshaft sensor needed to be replaced. Then an annoying sound came from the plastic interior. A month with the vehicle and one day I was going to work and the thing did not start, at first I thought it was the battery. but after several attempts it finally started. Finally, the tire pressure sensor went on and after a few revisions to the tires it has not turn off again.... I need help PLEASE! I really love the vehicle, the looks and the handling going off road, but I am about to run out of it.
