No one clear fix for issue. Appears to be widespread. I have a stock Jeep bought used from dealership. How is this not a recall? Issue started after a trip to the dealership. Coincidence? I hope so. Took to a local mechanic said would try to fix for just under $500. Have warranty so will see what the dealership has to say is the fix.

My 2009 Jeep Wrangler first did this violent shaking June 2014 while driving down the highway approximately 55 mph. My first thought was one of the front tires had blown out.Fortunately I was able to pull the Jeep to the side of the road and check for problems. No blown tire and no visible problems with front end. Mileage on Jeep was 22880.

Took the Jeep to my local mechanic and they checked front end alignment and all other front end parts and couldn't find anything wrong. He said the steering cylinder could be bad and suggested we replace it and we did. Thought the problem was fixed. Had to put my main truck in the shop the other day and decided to drive the Jeep while my 2013 F150 was getting repaired. I Was driving the Jeep home and once again this violent shaking occurred and almost threw me into the oncoming traffic almost having a head on collision with a big tractor trailer. This occurred February 16 ,2015 mileage 23400.

I got on the computer that night and goggled to see if Jeep had any recalls. That is when I found the phrase "Jeep Death Wobble". I understand that Jeep does not want to claim any responsibility for this problem. I am going to take this vehicle to my local Jeep dealership to see if they will fix the problem. Hopefully they will do the right thing. If not, I will repost to keep you informed. This is a horrible, horrible problem,

This is my third Jeep. Thought I had bought my dream Jeep. A used 2009 Rubicon from a local dealership. I'm well aware that this type of vehicle does not come with a smooth ride. Had never heard of something called a death wobble, but had the opportunity to experience it firsthand.

In October 2014 my vehicle became possessed and shook so violently I wasn't sure I would be able to control it to get it off the road. This was after an oil change and a tire rotation so I took it back to the establishment that serviced my vehicle where I learned of what is referred to as a death walk or death wobble. I took it to the dealership from where purchased the vehicle and was told it could be any number of things that would cause this and probably should first replace the steering stabilizer but that the stabilizer from the manufacturer would not be as strong or as good as the aftermarket one.

After a couple of days of trying to locate an aftermarket stabilizer they went ahead and installed one from the manufacture as I was getting ready to go on vacation and had planned to drive this vehicle. No wobble rock 'n roll for a couple of months and then another great oil change and tire rotation. After which a wild ride ensued soon thereafter. Between 50 and 55 miles an hour which is a normal driving speed for most of us, a little bump will cause my beloved jeep to turn into a 4000 pound bucking bronco. Anyone that has never experienced this cannot comprehend how scary this is between 55 miles an hour and 60 miles an hour to feel as if your vehicle is out of control and you have traffic in front of you behind you and on both sides of you. Yes, you hit the brakes to slow down and you get stopped. but in a moment of panic when this happened to me on occasion I didn't even look to see who was in the way to try to get off the road. luckily no traffic was in my way. After talking with the dealership again they now recommend new tires which I have had purchased and put on and it seems for the moment this has calmed the beast somewhat. However that little vibration you get before the death wobble actually starts is there when I get to around 55mph. And my heart just pounds just waiting for it to start again and I know it will. I contacted the dealership to see what they recommend because I know that as violently is this vehicle shakes when it gets the death wobble that the whole front end is probably loose and I know that something else is going to go. They now recommend a new track bar .

I have since this has started with my Jeep been searching on the Internet to see what I can do to resolve this and it appears it is a design flaw from the manufacturer which they acknowledge but do not accept responsibility. They are also full of recommendations of how to fix the death wobble which from what I can tell is a long list of $'s. It seems that one thing is not going to fix that it is numerous fixes one after the other.

People if you are reading this and have this problem please contact their corporate office and complain and complain on any website and any site that records your complaints like this one. I am not above putting a sign on my car telling anyone to stay clear of my vehicle it may go out of control at any moment and it is a design flaw from the manufacturer which they apparently do not feel responsible to correct. Since apparently there has not been "a death or fatality related to this problem there is no recall. So the manufacturer does not feel responsible to correct unless their design flaw causes somebody to die?

In addition to this there is another issue that which I will address in another complaint regarding what I now found out is fuel spit back which is not a recall either.

Previous issue with death wobble in October 2014 you can see my previous complaint in which a steering stabilizer was replaced which care of the problem for a couple months. Death wobble what I call death rock 'n roll again in January 2015 and was recommended to get new tires which I have done. No actual death wobble yet but car feels like it wants to go into the death wobble at 55 just with the shimmy and shaking. And yes The alignment is good and the tires are balanced correctly and air pressure in tires is correct. I have contacted the Jeep corporate office which really seems oblivious that this is occurring in the 2009 Jeep Wrangler but in other vehicles. Do not feel much assurance there. Feel like I see more $'s ahead

Driving down around a corner at about 60MPH on the interstate and the steering would violently shake. The car would be nearly uncontrollable until speed was reduced to about 20 MPH (while on interstate).

Dealer replaced ball joint and shimmy dampener but it still starts to vibrate after "fix".

I was bringing my daughter to my In-laws in the morning as I was going down the expressway at 100 kph, I came to the intersection where I had to turn left and as soon as I applied the brakes to slow down it happened, DEATH WOBBLE. I was afraid for my daughters life as well as my own, I didn't think I was going to come out of it. I am going to replace the tires that have 67,000 km on them (which didn't last long either), change the track bar with a more sturdier one (they must sell something better than Chrysler), and then get an alignment and see what happens. I will post what I find.

This is a Jeep, I always thought they were built tough, they did use them in the army did they not? That is how they got their reputation did they not? It is my understanding that people are also having problems with the ball joints being bad also so I will find out when they do the alignment. I sure hope not because they are gone also. WOW, at 67,000 km's, this would be an outrage.

Problem was first present in March 2014 when the vehicle had 67000+ miles. At that time we requested numerous times that the service folks look at the tie rod because it jumped in its socket when the wheel was turned to the right. The service department failed to reproduce the wobble and claimed that it was a 'Jeep Thing' and rotated the tires as a means to fixing the issue. They never bothered looking into the tie rod. A month later the issue was back and we took it back, this time they claimed it was the steering damper, they fixed that under my super duper extended warranty after a ton of back and forth. Now the wobble is back and worse then ever... and now they claim that its the tie rod and I'm out of my super duper warranty which expired at 70000 miles! I asked the service manager would this be it, would this reinstate my confidence in a vehicle that primarily transport 3 very small children, he point blank told me he didn't have an answer for that. My take is that they look at the over all 'possible' solution and run with that. If its fixed fine and if it's not deal with It because after all it's a JEEP THING!

That this, "Death Wobble" is a thing with Jeeps is totally unacceptable. In particular the response from Chrysler/Jeep.

Having a vehicle totally lose it's sh*t at 70 miles an hour is life threatening and it is criminal negligence for Chrysler/Jeep to fluff it off.

Had I known about this I would never, never, ever, have bought a Jeep! Now that I know about it and have experienced it, this piece of sh*t of gone and I will NEVER BUY ANOTHER CHYSLER/DODGE/JEEP again.

They need to be taken off the road, and the fact that they are still being sold just shows that their lobby is as powerful as our government is broken.

This is the "death wobble" as described by other Jeep owners often. It makes the Jeep "OUT OF CONTROL" as soon as I hit a bump above 55 mph. I have spent more than $1500 so far with no improvement. I have had the tires changed and balanced, the Trac bar damper changed, the front end has been aligned, The Trac bar bolt was changed, the ball joints have been changed, each and every front end item has been checked for looseness several times, and the front shocks have been changed.

I am very nervous about driving this car.

Bought my eep used from a dealership on 4/5/12 with 49,680 miles on it. On 8/29/12, at 56,853 miles I couldn't help but notice when the vehicle reached 60+ mph it would shake violently, and didn't cease until I dropped the speed to well below 20 mph. This has happened on the highway, and even more frightening on winding country roads! The first time it happened I thought my tire had flown off...

Took it to my mechanic and he did an alignment ($80) and replaced the steering stabilizer, aka, steering damper ($92) $173.00 fix all together. This fix worked up until about a week ago, 1/20/14. Have to bring it in again to have him check all the components between the pitman arm and the tie bar.

Needless to say, I'm not a happy camper.

Update from Feb 11, 2014: Update:: Just brought my Jeep back to the shop. Dropped $392. On wheel alignment, resurfacing rotors, and ANOTHER steering damper. Steering dampers don't seem to last long on this vehicle. Cheaper to do it yourself... about 300 of that was "labor".

I was driving home at 60-65mph from Baltimore with my cousin, fiance and aunt when I hit a minor pothole. The entire steering wheel/front section starts to violently shake and I was unable to stop it until I stepped on the breaks and slowed the car down to almost 25 mph ON THE HIGHWAY and almost drove off to the side of the road. This happened 4 other times following that incident in a matter of 2 weeks’ time. Finally I called the dealership where I purchased the car. They told me it was the steering dampener and that I would have to replace it. They also told me that I had to pay for the part, even though I had purchased an extended warranty from them. I was told that this was very common on Jeeps and although there have not been any reported deaths, I am positive this will one day lead to an accident and /or death. This is a very serious defect on Jeep’s part and they need to address the issue before they kill someone. By the way, my car only has 37k miles on it. STILL Fairly new!

I got this death wobble from the 40,000km service and recall of the steering damper (steering stabilizer i believe it's called) which is what Jeep called it. From the moment it came out of the service center, whenever i reached approx. 85km/h and went over a bump, my jeep would shake like crazy in the front end. I took it back several times and they couldn't fix it. Finally, after telling them that there wasn't a problem until they changed the steering damper, they replaced the steering damper again. Problem solved. But now I am worried about the car's front end and the problems I'm going to have over the next few years. What can I do? I love my Jeep and don't want to sell, but I think I have to. AAArrrgh!
