I brought my car to a local MBZ dealership two times complaining about the ongoing gas smell and was sent away. In December of 2010, I replaced the the fuel pump/tank/ components, which cost $3,600. The repair was not covered by the 50,000 mile warranty. I had 70,461 miles. Last month, in December 2023, the car broke down again with 269,000 miles. The mechanic told me that the warranty was good for 150,000 miles. I did a quick search to verify the original warranty and discovered that MBZ extended the warranty for 15 years with unlimited miles in 2015. Then, I located a subsequent addendum that offered to reimburse owners who had already replaced their fuel pump/tank components. I submitted it last week and received a check today - slightly over 13 years later! Thank goodness I kept the original invoice. I wanted to share this information since many posts mentioned that they paid for the repair themselves.

Next, I'm going to see if MBZ will replace the fuel pump/tank components that were replaced in 2010 since it was less than 15 years ago. Has anyone else been successful doing this?

Update from Jan 4, 2024: After receiving the reimbursement check, I contacted Mercedes USA to request that they replace the failed fuel tank/pump components that I had to replace in 2010. Mercedes USA stated that the extended warranty (15 years and unlimited mileage) in 2015 only applies to the original fuel tank/pump components. Therefore, the extended warranty on a 2007 350E MBZ expired in 2022. This doesn't seem right to me. I had to replace the original 2007 parts in 2010. At that time, Mercedes was still denying that anything was wrong with the fuel tank/pump components. Apparently, hundreds of MBZ owners were imagining the smell of gas for years. The warranty was eventually extended in 2015. Therefore, it seems to me that the replacement fuel tank/pump components that I got in 2010 were mostly likely the same bad parts that came on the car. I've read the extended warranty notices and none of them state that it does not apply to any parts replaced before the extended warranty period. At some point, Mercedes must have fixed the problem. Does anyone know how to find out when the faulty part(s) of the fuel tank/pump components were fixed? If you replace a bad part with another bad part due to the dealership denying that something's wrong with it in the first place, shouldn't it be covered under the extended warranty?

My E350 made it home and would not start. I turned the key and heard no fuel pump buzz. I removed the rear seat and located the sealed fuel pump and a pool of gas surrounding the electrical connection. It seemed like a significant fire hazard to me, and an obvious design flaw, if gasoline pools up around electrical wires. Mercedes knows about the issue to the extent that they increased the warranty coverage on certain PZEV vehicles. MBUSA states my vehicle is not a covered VIN and said any help I got from my dealer would be "good will". I imagine if my family burned up in the car the lawyers would have a field day with this. Sad response from MB for such an important safety issue. See the attached picture and you can see the damp fuel leak area.
