Vehicle steering is intermittently going out and driver is unable to turn the vehicle. I have contactted Ford and there is an existing recall (14S05) for this very item and my vehicle (year, make & model) is listed but they say my specific vehicle does not qualify.

The contact owns a 2009 Mercury Mariner hybrid. While driving approximately 25 mph, the power steering failed without warning and the steering became difficult to turn. The vehicle was not taken to be diagnosed or repaired. The vehicle was not included in NHTSA campaign number: 14V284000 (steering). Neither the dealer nor the manufacturer was notified of the failure. The approximate failure mileage was 96,000.

Electronic power steering module failure, replace entire module & column for $1698.89. Said previous recall was performed and Ford bears no responsibility.

Steering torque sensor is failing, resulting in loss of steering control. This vehicle was not included in the recall that Ford already issued for the problem in 2014 but should be.

While making a sharp left turn on a city street the power steering assist system failed completely! I barely avoided a collision. Apparently there have been thousands of similar failures. Why hasn't Ford paid for a repair on a system which is obviously flawed and dangerous when it fails!

Mariner Hybrid 4-cyl

  • 21,300 miles
The steering locked for 1 to 2 seconds during a right hand turn on an entrance ramp to a highway. It happened again 2 months later with the steering locking for 1 to 2 seconds on a left hand turn after stopping at a stop sign.

Power steering cut out, quit working, on left turn, speed about 10 mph. Outage lasted about 1-2 seconds. Believe would have hit far side curb if steering had not spontaneously recovered. This was first occurrence. Drove car directly to dealer from incident; diagnosis tbd. Afraid to drive. At higher speed or if had lasted just a little longer would have wrecked!
