Defective weld on the fill spout located on the fuel tank causes a strong gas smell and fuel dampening around the fill nozzle.

The gas filler inlet pipe connects to the side of my Pontiac Aztek fuel tank. The tank is plastic and the flange on the side of the tank is molded to the tank. I have a crack on the underside area of the flange. All but about 3 gallons of gas leaked out in my driveway. I asked the service manager at the local Pontiac dealer if there was a recall on this, he said no, but this was a common problem. I was quoted $1000 to replace the tank.

2001 Pontiac Aztek leaked gas due to a faulty gas tank. While driving the consumer smelled gas fumes. The fumes were bad enough to burn the occupants eyes and throat. The consumer had to crack the windows to get relief. The vehicle was parked and the consumer still smelled gas. He looked under the vehicle and notice a puddle of gas. The vehicle was taken to the dealer who determined that the seam in the gas tank were faulty.

The fuel tank of my 2001 Pontiac Aztek began to leak at the neck(of the tank). At my dealership (marietta GMC, Pontiac) I was told that there is a tsb on this problem and the mechanic stated that the procedure was to replace the tank at a cost of $ $950 to me. I feel that this is a safety concern and should be addressed via recall. If my home had gas fired water heaters or furnaces in the garage I most likely would not be writing this letter, because the first indication I had of this problem was with the leakage inside my garage, this could have caused a fire or explosion. Clearly this is a failure of materials as there has not been any abuse to the tank in any manner.

2001 Pontiac aztec leaking fuel from seam of gas tank, first noticed on 9/7/03. Brought to davis Pontiac dealer in richboro pa (where I bought the auto on April 14, 2001) informed me that since I have 48,400 miles on the car it will cost me 675 for the tank replacement, 100 for overnight shipment. I feel that the tank should never leak during the life of the automobile, and that since shoddy construction was used in manufacturing of the car, I should not be liable for the repair. Fuel leaking is a serious hazard, environmentally, socially, and concerning safety.
