On August 27, 2020 with under 72k miles on the car, my third serpentine belt, with under 30k miles of wear, partially disintegrated. This time there was no giant hamster wheel sound to warn of impending failure.

An oil seal disintegrated at the same time. Motor oil and bits of belt were sprayed all over the engine compartment and sucked into various engine components. Bits of shredded belt wrapped around and seized 1 pulley. Another pulley’s housing basically disintegrated. The timing chain snapped and is lying in pieces at the bottom of the engine.

My mechanic has concluded that this car needs a full engine rebuild or replacement engine. In addition, it wouldn’t be surprising if components that link up to the engine were also damaged although that is unknown at this time.
