I purchased a Volvo S-40 used in 2005 and it has been an excellent vehicle; good gas mileage, fun to drive (well as fun as an automatic can be), and reliable. On Saturday may 17th, I took the vehicle in for an oil change; drove it home and every time seemed fine. When I got up Monday morning the instrument gauge did not function and the LCD below the speed gauge read "Pin Code".
The stereo/cd player functions find; so this appears to be different from the anti-theft pin that must be entered if the battery is disconnected. I took it back to the dealership that performed the oil change, but they indicated that they had never heard of, nor seen anything of the sort. They dimly offered to "inspect" it for $80.00 an hour. I turned down their generous offer, and have decided to find help elsewhere.
The issue pops up on the net (usually with the V 40), but so far there is no definite solution. I think we are going to take it to a larger and more respected dealership next weekend. Hopefully, I can live without the speedometer until then...
