General Motors Recalls 523,000 Vehicles To Fix Seat Belts and Seats
GM finds trouble with seat belts in 470,000 cars, and seat problems in 53,000 trucks.

— General Motors is recalling almost 523,000 cars and trucks in two recalls, both involving parts related to the seats.

Chevrolet Malibu

The largest of the two recalls will see 470,000 model year 2011-2012 Chevy Malibu cars called back to repair cables associated with the seat belts.

GM says the steel cables that hold the front seat belts to the cars can weaken over time from people moving around in the seats. The cables can weaken to the point of breaking, a problem that has already caused one known injury. However, the automaker says no crashes have been reported even as 36 warranty claims have been made.

Chevy Colorado and GMC Canyon

GM says 53,000 model year 2015 Chevrolet Colorado and GMC Canyon trucks have front seat-frame attachments that can come loose in an accident.

The automaker blames the defect on problems during assembly of the seat-frame hooks. The loose hooks can mean a seat that detaches from the body of the truck in a crash.

It's a dangerous defect, but GM says it's unaware of any crashes or injuries related to the loose seat-frame hooks.

The recall is expected to begin in May 2015, when Chevy and GMC dealers will inspect the seats and correct any problems with the seat-frame attachments.

Owners with questions can call Chevrolet at 800-222-1020 or GMC at 800-462-8782. GM's number for this recall is 15150.
