The carrier bearing is faulty on 2005 equinoxes. Our mechanic told us this is a huge problem because it could cause the car to flip over. The major issue is that to repair the carrier bearing, they have to remove and replace the drive shaft. This has to be sent to Chevrolet, and since it can only be done by them, they have a strong arm on the price. ($1200) it is evident that this is a manufacturing defect because when I began to google 'drive shaft Chevy', it gave me 2005 Equinox as a suggestion. The year was specific in the problem.

Car doesn't start on first attempt. It tries, then even after I release the key it continues to start, like its stuck, I have to pump the gas to get it to start, and it acts flooded. ABS and traction control lights on. When I press on the brakes it feels stuck at the top and grinds and pulsates even though my brakes are good. I've had my speed sensors replaced twice, problem still ongoing. I have to push with all my weight for the brakes to "break through" what ever its stuck on and work, then they lock up. That's when the ABS/traction control lights come on, then I know the ABS is not trying to work and my brakes will stop me. I've almost crashed into things too many times.

This complaint is in regards to the 2005 Chevrolet Equinox. This vehicle was purchased used in August 2009 with roughly 42000 miles from carmax in dulles, va. Since the purchase of this vehicle, I have spent nearly 3000 dollars in repairs as it seems that parts are wearing out or malfunctioning far earlier than typical. At about the 60000 mile mark, all four rotors and brakes needed to be replaced due to the rotors being warped. I was told by the mechanic that this is not common and should not have happened at this type of mileage. Cost for this repair was about $500. Tires have needed to be replaced twice since the purchase of this vehicle; once around 60000 miles due to "uneven wear" which was likely a result of the bad rotors, and again around the 100000 mark also for "uneven wear". this cost $400 on each occasion. At the 80000 mile mark a loud knocking noise was heard coming from the front end, and proceeded to get worse up to the 100000 mile mark. Between those mileage marks, the front end began to feel very loose. The problem was that the struts prematurely failed and created a very dangerous driving condition. The cost for this repair was over $1300 and was repaired on June 27, 2011. After doing a bit of research, I discovered that this is a very prominent and common problem for this year, make, and model. On top of these issues, there is also apparently a problem with the rear end as well that is also creating a knocking. Also, the daytime running lights have begun to flash repeatedly and very quickly at random times as well as turning themselves on and off. The cd player also broke. I feel that this is a very unsafe and unreliable vehicle that should be investigated to determine whether this is truly due to "wear and tear", or if this is a factory fault.

2005 Chevrolet Equinox, mileage 68,800. "growling" heard coming from the rear end of the vehicle. Diagnosed by repair shop as rear hub bearings going bad and they needed to be replaced before total failure which could have caused seizing or lose of wheels. No recall has apparently been issued and it isn't a "known" problem but local dealership said that they had 16 replacements in stock.

I took title to my 2005 Equinox on Dec 27, 2004. On may5, 2007, I reported a noise in the rear suspension. The dealership ordered the parts and 1.5 months latter replaced the rear differential drum & clutch pack assembly on Sep 9, 2005, I reported a groaning noise in the front end to the dealership. On Sep 16, 2005, the dealership replaced the front struts and both torsion bar supports. On Dec 16, 2006, I reported a tapping noise from the rear right. The dealership has never been able to find the cause. On Nov 13, 2006 reported that the transmission slips and lags on uphills. The dealership could fund no problem. On May 1, 2007, reported that the door chime comes on when no key is in ignition. Dealership replaced ignition cylinder. On Aug 16, 2007 reported the same noise from front end and dealership replaced upper strut mounts. On Oct 30, 2007 reported that the groaning noise was back. The dealership replaced strut mounts and repositioned strut boot. On Mar 18, 2008, reported the noise to the dealership and they replaced the leaking strut mounts. The next day, the car was making the same groaning noise in the front end. To the dealerships credit, they have been very nice about all of the repairs.

My wife and I bought this 2005 Equinox in March of 2005. It had 9K miles on it. A few times after that it did not sound like it was going to start. When it did the whole vehicle shook, it was like starting a manual in gear. At around 12K miles the front end started shaking when the were brakes applied. Took it in to be serviced in February 2006 and asked them to check brakes. They said there was no problem. They did not feel anything. Contacted Chevrolet and the customer service told me to take the vehicle back to the dealership and have them check the brakes again. When we did they told us the rotors were warped. This should not be happening already. Still has half the life on the brakes. Today we took it in to have the shocks and struts replaced. This was due to a loud noise we kept hearing. Hopefully that fixed that problem. As far as the brakes and rotors, the dealership told us not to worry about having new rotors put on until the brakes were worn. It is really dangerous on the interstate when someone slows down in front of you when you're doing 50 to 65 mph and it don't feel like your going to stop. We were told this wasn't covered under warranty. Something should be done about this. I am done with Chevrolet.

: the contact stated while driving at various speeds, the vehicle stalled without warning. The vehicle restarted and was placed in drive, however it did not move. The vehicle was towed to a dealership who was unable to determine the cause of the failure. Also, the vehicle shook while driving over 60 mph and when the brakes were applied. The dealership replaced the tires twice, rotated, and balanced the tires in an effort to correct the problem. The dealership also replaced the rims, wheels, and hubs, however the problem persisted. In addition, the air conditioner unit fell off the bracket which caused the engine to shut down. The vehicle was towed to the dealership. Updated10/04/06.
