Beginning in late Dec. 2014, I was filling up at a Citgo station when the attendant said it only took 35 cents worth of gas and the pump handle cut off. I looked at my instrument panel gas gauge and it said I only had 1/4 tank of gas (which is what I truly thought I had). I got out of the car and went back to the attendant and asked him to try it again. He did, and it did the same thing. I tried it and it did the same thing again. I have NEVER run out of gas on the road and was not about to start at my age, so I asked him to keep pumping (in spurts) until my instrument panel indicated the tank was full. He did (with a $3 tip), and after about 10 minutes I finally saw the needle on the panel close to full and told him to stop. It took 10.6 gallons, which was close to what I would estimate was true.
Since then, I called a Chrysler dealer on Rte 38 in NJ and the Lady answering the phone told me there was a recall on that problem, so I took it in. When I got to the dealership, the "service guy" looked in his computer and said "I can't find a recall on that VIN". BUT how about a 63,000 mile service for $189.00?" Sounded to me like the old "bait and switch" so I departed. I started keeping a mileage chart in my iPhone so that I wouldn't run out, but it is a pain. Is this a known problem and should a dealer know how to fix it? Help!
