Windstar 3.8L V6

  • Automatic transmission
  • 126,000 miles

I had the same problem as others have described. I had the power steering pump replaced and resulted in leaking from the rack and pinion... then had to replace the entire rack and pinion. A very expensive fix. I've had several front end issues repaired, but this was the most expensive. Now the transmission is shifting hard into second and the ABS light and battery light are coming on. I'm guessing these three repairs are going to also be expensive... more than the cars is worth at this point. 10 years and 133,000 miles and it's time to send it to the scrap yard!

I just replaced the power steering pump than was informed the rack and pinion needed to be replaced. This is a very well maintained car. There is no reason the rack should go on it. I also think there should be a recall on it.

Dealer fixed problem initially charging me almost $900. Then the new steering rack started leaking two days later. Dealer replaced the second leaking steering rack at no cost to me other than my time.

A car with this many miles should not have a rack go on it. Never drove the car hard and service it regularly. This should have a recall on it.

I am very irate with this re-occuring problem with the steering rack in my Windstar. In short I have replaced this rack once on warranty and once out of my own pocket and now it is leaking once more! It is minus 35 degrees celcius and it is 1 hell of a cold walk out there. It will be better for me to take the city transit to work every day. If I operated at this accuracy in my job I would not still have 1. WHY CAN FORD GET AWAY WITH THIS!!!!!?

Need to replace the rack assy. Just had the power steering pump replaced ($360.00) and was told that the rack and pinion needed replaced (over $1,000). They could not just replace the seals. Another reason to not buy a Windstar.
