I have been using the car for over a year by putting gas in it very slowly a cup full at a time as it keeps shutting off. Takes a very long time. Now I decided to get it fixed so I could give it to my daughter. Two mechanics tried but could not find the problem. The first one was a small repair shop. The second one was the large Ford dealer who said they could absolutely fix it even if the other guy could not. They worked on it for an hour and said that they went all the way down the suggestions in their manual and the last one said "If none of these work you need a new fuel tank" He said the new fuel tank would cost me $1400. I then checked Lemonadecar web page and found 3 other people posting the same complaint and saying the Ford people did nothing for them either. I checked recalls and this was never recalled. Another site said that the problem only affected 2002 Windstars. Why were they not recalled. ? Does anyone have a suggestion other than an expensive new fuel tank?
Update from Oct 31, 2010: I took the car to a different, much smaller, dealer 7 miles down the road from the bigger Brantmeir Ford, Sheboygan who could not fix it and said I should buy a new fuel tank. The second smaller dealer, B and B Jon Kennedy Ford, Sheboygan Falls, said they did not think the first person tried hard enough to blow dirt out of the vent and I should definitely NOT replace the fuel tank. They fixed it by blowing the dirt out of the vent with more power, I guess. At any rate, they fixed the problem for $43 and the first dealer was going to charge me $1400 for a new fuel tank which would not have solved the problem. I went back to dealer #1 and demanded my $49 back form their looking at it and telling me they could not find the problem but I needed to buy a new tank. I got the check this week. Needless to say, I will not go to Brantmeir Ford again.
