Huge win for car owners! All TSBs to be made public. The Center for Auto Safety just made the NHTSA (US Government) make public the full text of all TSBs from now on. They are the same organization that has petitioned the NHTSA & filed lawsuits to protect car owners over exploding gas tanks & other major safety issues. Whenever you drive in your car, you are safer thanks in part to a lot of work over the years by this small but very effective consumer advocacy group.

Windstar 6-cyl

  • Automatic transmission
  • 90,252 miles

The contact owns a 2003 Ford Windstar. While driving approximately 55 mph, the vehicle stalled. The contact stated that he coasted to the side of the road. When he waited a few minutes after the vehicle stalled and turned it back on, it would perform correctly. The vehicle was towed to a local repair shop. The local mechanic advised him to take the vehicle to an authorized dealer. The vehicle was eventually taken to an authorized dealer where the contact was informed that the intake manifold casket needed replaced. The dealer replaced the intake manifold casket, installed a throttle body spacer and throttle air valve assembly and re-flashed the PCM to the computer and the iac valve. The contact stated the failure occurred again while driving from the dealership. The vehicle was taken back to the dealer where the vehicle stayed for two weeks. The dealer then installed a crank shaft sensor and a wire assembly. The vehicle had not been repaired fully as the contact picked the vehicle up before final repairs were performed. The failure mileage was 90,252 and the current mileage was approximately 91,000. Updated 12/29/10 updated 01/03/11

This incident has happened several times with our 2003 Ford Windstar which we bought used approximately 3 months ago. It has happened both to me and my wife. You can stop for traffic and when you start to go again, you can barely touch the accelerator and the car lurches forward and the engine races really fast and when you try to step on the brake it doesn't stop right away. It kind of flies through the air and although my wife and I keep a big space behind the car in front of us, we've both narrowly missed striking the vehicles ahead of us. It kind of sounds like the Toyota thing. I've called several Ford dealers to ask them about this problem we're having and they just brush me off. We're afraid to drive the van. Have there been any recalls on this make and model. What should we do?

Cruise control automatically engages and slowly accelerates the vehicle. When not using cruise control and I remove my foot from the gas pedal (not yet applying the brakes), the vehicle does not slow down, but actually accelerates at a slow rate and continues to do so until I apply the brakes.

  • 80,450 miles
The contact owns a 2003 Ford Windstar. The contact was pulling into a parking spot when suddenly, smoke began emitting from the hood. The contact opened the hood and saw that the engine compartment was on fire. The fire department extinguished the fire and the police took a report shortly after. The vehicle was then towed to an authorized dealershi.P, where the contact was informed that the fire was caused by the speed control deactivation switch (recall 09V399000). The dealer told the contact to call the insurance company so the repair costs would be covered but the insurance company refused as the failure was caused by vehicle malfunction and not an accident. The dealer contacted the manufacturer who requested pictures of the damage to determine whether they would assume responsibility for the vehicle. The current and failure mileages were approximately 80,450.

  • 74,000 miles
The contact owns a 2003 Ford Windstar. The vehicle accelerated without warning immediately after he approached a traffic light. The front coil springs on the drivers side also broke which caused the coil springs to pierce the tire and the front end of the vehicle fell on the ground. The vehicle was towed to a local repair facility and the mechanic replaced the tires and the coil springs for over $800. The contact suspects that the failure was caused by the cruise control. The dealer didn't agree that the cruise control caused the failure. The manufacturer was notified; however, they have not responded. The failure mileage was 74,000.

I have a 2003 Windstar and the brake pressure differential deactivation switch (2B264) located under the master cylinder (behind the air filter) started leaking and started smoking when it shorted the contacts. ABS and brake light on 2003 Windstar. The speed control switch (located under brake master cylinder) is leaking and causes this light to be on. Replaced speed control switch but both lights are still on. Retrieved ABS code error and it is C1185 - relating to the ABS relay failure which is connected to the ABS module itself. Repair of such is very costly (Ford quoted between $800-$900; another shop quoted $700). I believe this should be part of a recall that Ford should make as it is a safety issue and a design failure (and very costly!). additional reference:
