This site gave me insight to what to expect on this year model and the known issues. (input shaft bearing and or noisy shifting). Honda has some issues of quality control on these years. I've had two Honda minivans, and will change to Sienna this time around. The quality control had gone down for minivans for Honda. That being said, there new 2016-17 models look very nice. Maybe they took time to check customer service forums.

Civic LX SE 4-cyl, 1.7L

  • Manual transmission
  • 75,000 miles

I had the transmission replaced at about 75,000 miles along with the clutch and shifting cable because of the grinding noise. It worked fine w/o any noise until about 96,000 miles when the noise started up again. I've been told that the same part has failed in this transmission.

I give up dealing with this issue and will never buy a Honda again. This is clearly a defective part that needed to be recalled. I got a letter in the mail about a recall for this car and was really hopping it was this issue, but it turned out to be a recall for the air bags.

Apparently the qualification to get a recall on cars these days is that it is only a recall if the defect can kill someone or make Honda liable for massive damages. All other issues will not even be considered as recall-able.

Civic LX 1.7L

  • Manual transmission
  • 70,215 miles

My 2005, Honda Civic LX with manual transmission has started to make a grinding noise when I let the clutch out. It also makes a ticking noise when accelerating in 1st and 2nd gear. I took it to the Honda Dealership (Wheaton Honda) and was told that the Input Shaft Bearing was bad. I was told by the Honda Foreman that this is a very common and costly repair with this year/model. I was quoted $2200.00 to start with and likely further repairs when the transmission was opened up. For a car with only 113,000 KM I was shocked to have this problem.

I have made two complaints with Honda Canada and was told that no assistance would be offered as I am out of warranty. I was "brushed off" and basically told to go away. I have been a loyal Honda customer for 15 year and was under the impression that they stand behind their products....I was sadly mistaken!

spending 1500$ for a repair at this mileage is just unjustified. This is a major problem and should be simply recalled.

I took car into shop immediately after hearing the noise, mechanic first told me it was the throwout bearing, and that i might as well replace clutch as well with that mileage. i set up an appointment to get this repaired to later find that its the bearings in my transmission that need to be replaced. The shop i took it to is a honda dealership thinking they would know of any and all problems and know of this common problem in this make and year. I later youtubed the problem to find that there are numerous videos of multiple years that had this same problem around the same number of miles. this is ridiculous and needs attention and needs to be made right by Honda. If i would have known I'd be out of 1400+ dollars replacing all of this shortly after the first tune up I wouldn't have purchased a Honda now knowing they kept this problem under the radar and are doing nothing to inform their customers that this is a common problem.

Civic LX 1.7L

  • Manual transmission
  • 46,241 miles

My 2005 Civic Honda (manual transmission) makes this annoying rattling noise every time I shift into first or second gear. I took it to the dealership and they told me that they didn't really know what is going on but found that "bad bearings worn inside transmission shaft will need overhaul" and this would cost me a minimum of $1400.00, maybe more if additional parts have to be replaced.

I've been driving manual cars all my life and have never encountered this kind of problem in a car that only has 46241miles. I reported this problem to Honda and tried to get some help me with the cost of this repair but the representative, Caroline, was not helpful at all, failing to return calls, reminding me that the car was no longer under warranty and that I didn't have much of a history with the dealership as I ONLY took my car in for maintenance every year. When I replied that the Honda owners manual did not mention how many times a year the car has to be taken in for maintenance and pointed out my car's low mileage, she told me that driving a car too little (i.e. less than 12K miles /year, according to her) can actually cause damage!

This is my first Honda civic & I had heard amazing things about how dependable and long wearing this car was, so I bought one, never imagining that it would be one of the least reliable car I had ever owned, and that Honda would not stand behind its products. Live and learn, I guess, but as far as I'm concerned, I'm NEVER EVER buying a Honda again.

Civic EX

  • Manual transmission
  • 57,000 miles

I guess you could classify it as a rattle... but to me it sounds like the car is sputtering in 1st gear... Say I go 0-8MPH and let off the gas, you can really hear the sputter/rattle... when you go 12-15 MPH in 1st, it makes a more high pitched stressful sound (like there are belts that are getting stressed maybe). This only happens in 1st gear.

I just got the car checked out today and was told that it is more than likely the transmission (they are saying that is the confirmed case now).

I don't understand how the car could have issues... I have treated this car perfectly and it only has 57K on it... I am now thinking that I will have to get this fixed (thank GOD I bought the extended warranty for 7 years) and sell it, never looking to buy Honda again.

I thought that Honda's were reliable and they were the most cost effective, but I am second guessing now... will repost with additional details, but for right now the estimate is $2K for the fix (hoping not out of my pocket).

Civic EX 4 cyl

  • Automatic transmission
  • 200,000 miles

A D V E R T I S E M E N T S

The transmission on my 2005 Honda Civic EX started making grinding/groaning noises after it was dislodged from a snowdrift in Feb. 2011. This started the day after. I have had the car for more than 3 years so I assumed it was no longer covered under warranty. By 3 weeks I realized that the intermittent grinding sound at about 35 MPH in the city was not noise from rough pavement, but something wrong with the car. I took the car to Tires Plus and they ruled out any tire issues and said they suspected transmission/drive train problems.. I then took the car to Perkins Automotive in Kansas City MO who confirmed Tires Plus' diagnosis and said the car would need to be checked by a transmission specialty shop. I then took the car to BRB transmission in Kansas City MO and they confirmed something was wrong with the second gear and the transmission would need to be rebuilt at a cost of approx. $2600.00. Being without a vehicle and commuting 60 miles to work each way, I had the work done.

This issue sounds more than suspiciously like the recent recall issue Honda is having and I feel reimbursement for the repair would be the only fair thing for Honda to do. The cost is approximately the same as having the same work done at a Honda dealer and being reimbursed at 50 percent of that rate.

Civic LX 1.7L

  • Manual transmission
  • 85,000 miles

Honda lost another customer, called the 1800 999-1009 and told them about my problem, and asked for the "good will repair" since the car was out of warranty. In return they rather loose a customer instead of taking care of one. They know they cars are having transmission problems, but they won't do anything since there is no recall and is not a safety issue. So for all those Loyal Honda Customer send a clear message to Honda " STOP BUYING HONDA" and spread the word "HONDA IS NOT WHAT USED TO BE".
