We bought our 2009 Honda Civic in late August of 2009. We have been driving it for years, until last spring, when the light bulb finally came on in my head. I had been seeing a pain specialist for years, with terrible pain in my hips and running down my sciatic nerve. After years of trying to figure out what was causing this pain, many injections to calm the sciatic nerve, I was diagnosed, with affirmation, of piriformis syndrome. I realized that I was always staggering after getting out of the car. It would take awhile to be able to walk normally, but still so much pain. I stopped riding/driving the Civic a year ago and the piriformis syndrome, with the help of injections and physical therapists, has subsided.

Yesterday, our van needed servicing, so I drove the Civic, for an hour, doing a couple of errands, figuring a short time wouldn't be problematic. By the time I returned home, I could hardly get myself out of it, as you have to climb in and down, and getting out is the reverse of that. Incredible pain, again! Affirmation that the seats in the car are the culprits. My husband doesn't seem to have an issue, I guess because of his height, but I will never get in it again.

I read somewhere that Honda has "redesigned" its seats. I won't ever buy another one. Our first one was a 1999 and I drove it for ten years, 200K, with no problem. They apparently "redesigned" the seats of the model in between that time.

Civic

  • Automatic transmission
  • 46,687 miles

I purchased this Honda Civic and was happy with the car until approximately 2 weeks later. I developed the worst lower back pain from the seats. I have never had lower back pain in my life. This is so miserable. I purchased the car used, and I know I will take a huge hit on trading the car in. I went to the chiropractor about my back and I told him I got a new car...the first thing he said to me was, "is it a Honda Civic?" I was, of course, shocked that he knew what I had purchased. He then tells me that 4 other people in the last week have been in his office complaining of the same back issue and they drive Honda Civics as well. I guess what I want is some sort of satisfaction from Honda. I went online and apparently I am not the only one with this problem. Can you please help me?

Thank you

Connie

Civic LX 1.8L.4-cylinder

  • Manual transmission
  • 112,000 miles

I bought my 2009 Honda LX in January 2016. It only had 76,000 miles on it and is in near perfect condition. It took a month before I noticed that my lower back region above my left hip developed a pain that got worse the longer I was driving the car. It then started to radiate down my leg to my knee. I did everything to help it. I put a cushion down then a towel. Neither worked. I now try to drive the car as little as possible and share my wife's car. Looking to sell the car and take a loss. It wasn't until just a few months ago that I checked into Carcomplaints.com and read other peoples accounts having similar issues. Hindsight is 20-20. I wish I knew then what I know now and wouldn't have bought the car.

I have been experiencing severe pain in my lower back, hip and knee on an ongoing basis for the past few years. I was just mentioning to my mechanic that I was planning to get rid of the car and he told me about others experiencing the same problem(s)

I have had the car for two months and it is the most uncomfortable seat I have ever driven in. After 15minutes of driving my left hip is aching.

Since the day I bought my 09 Honda Civic it has been causing sever back pain. This comes on within minutes of sitting in the car and doesn't go away until I get out of the car. After about an hour of driving the pain becomes almost unbearable. I've tried various seat and back cushions, all the possible adjustments, turning the headrest around, and nothing helps.

The only thing that ever causes me back pain is the Civic. It could be the angle of the seat or the hard built-in lumbar support. Many other people are complaining on forums about this exact problem with Civics & Accords. I like the car and it's disappointing that I will have to trade it in and lose money just because of Honda's poorly designed seat.
