My mint condition W210 '00 E320 Mercedes caught fire last week while my wife was pulling into her high rise office garage in downtown seattle. Fortunately, she was able to escape without injury before the fire grew and consumed the whole engine compartment. This engine fire started on its own with no outside factors. This car had been fully maintained during my 11 year ownership by Mercedes of bellevue and Mercedes of seattle. The car only had 155,000 miles on it, still fairly low mileage compared to the other Mercedes I have owned over the years. I notified Mercedes of seattle about this incident. No one in service seemed particularly concerned at the dealership, although they mentioned they have never seem a W210 catch on fire and burn on its own. Thus my message to you.

On July 5th on a busy city street in charlotte nc the brakes suddenly locked and brought the car to a stop. The cars behind me were able to avoid a rear end accident. There were no warning lights on at the time but once the brakes locked the bas/esp lights appeared. I got off of the street and turned the car off and on the restart all lights went off. Tried to drive the car home but within one mile the same thing happened again. I was scared to drive it so I had to be towed.

I am the owner of a 2000 E320. I have been having chronic problems with headlamps, fog lights, and brake lamps going out very frequently. Often, I receive an error message that the "lamps are inoperable", after checking all bulbs, I find this is not the case, Mercedes may not admit to this, but there is an electrical problem with many of their cars. I have just recently (two days ago) had my passenger side bulb housing melt away. Don't know how long that been happening. I believe I am lucky that the car has not caught on fire as of yet with all of the electrical issues. The only good news I have about these constant problems is, the body repair company for Mercedes-Benz of South atlanta (ga), will see me on Monday to see if they can replace the headlamps housing, provided they have one in stock. So, "wish me luck" and pray for Mercedes to do the right thing before something bad happens to one of their customers......

90K miles gauge cluster led clock and outside temperature displays failing. Can not read number. Not a major problem, but it has less than 100K miles and it's a 2000 I had a 1996 and now a 1993 with almost twice the mileage and all the displays work.

While driving the vehicle, a small amount of condensation dripped from a water bottle sitting in the center cup holder. Immediately, the widows went down startling me as to what was happening. The window became unresponsive and at this point was stuck in the down position. I was able to put the window up using the keyless remote. Later that day, the switch began to work the windows but the rear windows no longer work from the front switches nor does the left side mirror. Upon investigation, others have had this same issue proving a design flaw. The electronic circuitry positioned below the cup holder is not water proof and the slightest amount of water will short circuit the system. Others have had the entire transmission lock due to the water ingress. Mercedes Benz should provide repair under a recall and provide a repair that will water proof the circuits.

Driving vehicle at approximately 50 mph and engine suddenly stopped. Pulled to side of road without the use of power steering or brakes. Car would not start for approximately 2 minutes. Finally started and did not stall again. Next day, same thing happened. Was told it was a failure of the crank position sensor and that they are a common failure on a Mercedes. Vehicle has 76K miles.

Vehicle has two defects that may indirect cause injury and are very expensive to repair. The vehicle has a sunroof directly over the shifting console and has a console that opens to hold liquids directly over the shifting console. When there was less than one minute of light rain, it will get down in the shifter and the vehicle would become undriveable and must be towed to the nearest dealer. The vehicle was only 4 months old and Mercedes did not cover moisture damage within the warranty. During moderate rain and wet (not flooded) streets, as the consumer stopped the vehicle, the windows began to go up and down, the alarm went off and on, and the lights went on and off by themselves. Small amount of fluid spilled from cup holder in 2000 E320 during braking. Disabled the car almost immediately by destroying electronic transmission system. Carbecame stuck in 2nd gear. When pulled off highway and tried to restart, car was stuck in park. Told by mb dealer in fresno, ca that even minute amounts of liquid will disable the car in this way. Car disabled in same way in May 2000 but was never told by mb that problem was due to moisture or using cup holder. Not informed of this problem when car was leased in 2000.
