CarComplaints.com Notes: Although it has a stellar record in terms of vehicle problems, initially the 4th generation (2003 - 2009) 4Runner didn't earn our top "Seal of Awesome" rating because it received poor crash test ratings for rear impacts. However it's proven to have one of the lowest driver death rates out of all vehicles (not just SUVs), so we've bumped it back up to our top award.

I love my 4Runner but I hate all this rust. I really have no idea what to do here. Help me Toyota come on! This is ridiculous I really hate to watch my pride & joy crumble like this, it is so sad and worrisome.

We purchased this Certified 2007 Toyota 4Runner Sport in 2012. The last couple of years the rust on the frame is getting real bad. The rear hatch has rust coming through the body panel and looks terrible. Last week my wife had it serviced and the shop told her that the rust on the frame and under-carriage is severe and that she should not use the rear hitch for the rust that is present. She has tried to call the dealership and they were of no help. Then tried emailing Toyota and the replies come back saying that the address is no longer being used. This vehicle is only 9 years old and the rust is severe. We do not see this kind of rust on the other 4th generation 4Runners. Something was very wrong with how ours was made.
