This is regarding the windshield of 2017 Toyota Highlander. The car was bought brand-new in 2017 from the dealer. Just over 2500 miles later, some very tiny stones chipped the windshield and left a small crack. While the car was parked in the night, the crack spread longer. With the normal driving, the crack grew day by day, inch by inch, and within a week, it become a major crack.

Since the crack grew inch by inch during the nighttime, it indicated the quality of the windshield was really bad and the windshield was installed or designed with major flaws. The airflow under the hood amplified the chip/crack and quietly transformed it into a major crack. The airflow propelled the crack to grow and the low quality of the windshield led the way to grow. There is no doubt that it is the design that need to blame. This design made the windshield extremely weak and fragile, which is hidden to customers.

Compared to another car, which has more than 150k solid highway mileage and never had similar issues, it is apparent that Highlander’s windshield manifests its extremely low strength, very fragile and vulnerable to any impact. It seems the windshield is so weak that even a small acorn fallen from the tree can easily create a crack on the windshield. The windshield has no strength at all.

It seems Toyota is trying to make more profit from windshield by selling easy-breaking windshields to customers and customers need frequently replace their windshields. With more and more sensors built-into the windshield, each windshield replacement would generate a good profit.
