I have had problems with my brakes working in my 2010 Toyota Prius. I was driving on a cold, wet road that was bending to the right. I pressed the brake pedal to slow the car, the car stuttered then accelerated while I was braking. The car slid off the road, into a ditch, and accelerated itself out of the ditch on the side of the road, the whole time I was depressing the brake pedal. No one was injured, no property damage was sustained, and there were no other witnesses. The left front bumper of my car sustained body damage that has not been replaced or fixed. The left front wheel well was pushed out of place so that when I turned the steering wheel at a sharp right, the left front tire would rub against the hard plastic wheel well. I had to pay to get the wheel well pushed and bolted back into place. This is the incident that took place on January 28th. Prior to this incident, I have also had other times when the brakes failed, most often when I was driving at night when it was colder outside. They had failed at least three times while I was depressing the brakes to stop at a stop sign. While I depressed the brakes the car would jump forward and accelerate instead of slowing. I would have to take my foot of the brake and reapply pressure to get the car to come to a stop.

Problem is with my 2010 Toyota Prius, brakes seem to fail and the vehicle will actually lurch forward when braking on a bumpy or icy or snowy conditions. Date given below is approx to when I bought the vehicle and is a constant problem and ongoing. It is difficult to reproduce though, and you never know when it is going to happen.

I own a Toyota Prius 2010 model. I acquired this vehicle in Sep of 2009. I have noticed that when the car was traveling on a bumpy road, the brakes doesn't seem to engage. It seem to accelerate. I have noticed this only in slow speeds and it never occurred to me that it could be a manufacturing mistake. I blamed it on the road condition. This has happened many times and Jan 10 was an approximate date. Now realizing that I should have voiced my concern earlier. I am a long term Toyota owner and I always trusted Toyota and it must have blind sighted me. Now I am getting nervous driving the car.

1. I live in Minnesota. After the first big snowstorm when I was braking on snow and ice, there was a very strong burning rubber-like burning smell, and the braking changed. I started sliding through stop signs and into intersections when on icy pavement. I was very concerned and took the car to the dealership on December 12. They reported there was nothing wrong with the car. 2. on January 5, I was on a totally iced over street in park rapids, Minnesota. I made a left turn, then was slowing down to make a right turn into a parking spot. I was going very slowly. I depressed the brake, but the car failed to slow down. I kept sliding and hit the cement parking marker, which punctured the front of the car (in the bumper area). 3. nothing has been done, and I am afraid to drive the car. I have contacted my insurance company, who have suggested that I ask Toyota to cover the damages. I have filed a complaint with Toyota, but am still waiting for a return my call. I will be contacting my dealer today.

I purchased a Prius 2010 in the summer of 2009. I called my dealer a week ago to report that I too had experienced the braking issue that was reported on the news. I was not sure if the car was skidding the first time I experienced it, I was going slowly and put on brakes over a slippery patch and the car lurched before braking, but then it happened again over a rough surface. When I reported this to the service department of my dealer, conicelli Toyota of springfield, pa, I was told that no recall had been announced, no other concern or care was given to me at that time. I did ask for the contact information of the company and was given an 800 number and the website. I tried calling the customer service line of Toyota twice to report my experience, and was on hold for over 10 minutes before hanging up without being able to leave a message. I contacted my dealer again and spoke with the customer relations manager, I asked that they report my experience to you and that they work to advocate for a solution for the brake issue. I am awaiting a response from them. I again tried the 800 number without success and then accessed your website. I was unable to locate a place to send or post my comment/concern, so I am writing this letter. Please add me to the 210 complaints you have reported for the Prius braking problem. I am deeply concerned that Toyota 'fixed' the problem on the production line but was not proactive in finding a correction for the models produced before January 2010. I will be contacting my lawyer and other authorities about this issue. My safety and the safety of my family and those that share the road with me are of utmost importance to me. I am concerned that they are not of the utmost concern of Toyota, who would leave us all at risk unless public pressure is brought to bear.

2010 Prius brake problem experienced Sunday, February 7, 2010. I was turning right into a driveway from a busy street and applied my brakes as I was entering the upward slanted driveway when braking disappeared and I surged forward about one to two seconds before applying the brakes a second time and regaining braking capability. It's the only time this has happened to me since buying the Prius last November, but because of the uncertainty I read today about whether Toyota would issue a recall in the U.S. after doing so in Japan for the same cars, I thought it would be worthwhile to submit this to you.

When braking while going over bumps, the car lurches forward and doesn't seem to grab until after the bump. It is especially noticeable when exiting a high speed road onto a decelration lane. It has been ongoing since purchasing the vehicle. I have made adjustments in operating the vehicle to minimize the number of occurences, but cannot always foresee the bumps or ridges in road surfaces that precipitate the incident.

After owning the car for 1 month, I have noticed that on occasion, when I press the brakes, the car will automatically accelerate for a second before breaking. This does not happen every time, but it does happen a few times day. I have no way of figuring out what could be contributing factors since it just happens when I am braking just before it completely stops, no matter what speed I am driving.

While slowly decelerating using the regenerative brakes, the regenerative brakes turn off occasionally at low speeds (5-10 mph). There is a very short (<1 second) burst of forward movement before the actual brakes activate. During this whole time the brake pedal is consistently depressed. This burst forward does whip the driver back into the seat a bit due to the unexpected nature of this event. This has probably occurred about 5 times in the past 2.5 months since I purchased the vehicle.

Our 2010 Toyota Prius is experiencing periodic, temporary brake failure/unintended acceleration. My wife is the primary driver and states that on 4-5 occasions over the past 9 months, when braking over uneven surfaces at speeds of 10-30 mph, there can be a temporary period of unintended acceleration lasting 1-2 seconds.

I have purchased a 2010 Toyota Prius, and never noticed any problem with my braking, until 1/22/10. I was driving over a section of road, that was uneven where a bridge meets the road. I was braking for the stoplight ahead that was red and cars were waiting in the line. When I applied the brakes at about 10 mph, and hit the uneven road section, the car seemed like it lost braking, for an instant. I had to push harder on the brake pedal to assure a stop. I have since driven that same section of road to replicate the problem, and it had repeated itself, but not on every occasion. It appears that there is some issue with the hybrid brake system...between regeneration and friction but not sure what the issue is. I only have 3800 miles on the car so have not called the dealer for service yet. Will plan to do that if it can wait until the first 5,000 mile service.

1. event: Normal city driving (I.e., car in drive and cruise control off) 2. the failure: Press on brake and feel softness instead of firmness; must press much harder on brake than typically required to bring car to stop in same distance. Failure occurs sporadically during course of regular driving. Have not associated failure with traveling over rough surfaces. 3. contacted Toyota dealer and was told that we would receive letter in mail instructing us on what to do, because no correction has been developed yet for this problem in existing cars.

2010 Toyota Prius loses brake response completely after hitting any medium sized or larger bump. Happens at least twice a week and has resulted in sliding and hitting a curb once. Car is unsafe to drive. Took car to Toyota dealer and was told "there is no fix for this issue at this time" I was given the Toyota customer experience phone number and when I called I was greeted with a recorded voice saying "we cannot take your call at this time" "if you need to speak to a representative call back later" and then hung up on.

As I braked to make a right turn at an intersection, my two week old 2010 Toyota Prius stopped braking when I hit a section of the roadbed that had some winter damage to it and the car's anti-lock brakes attempted to cut in. It felt like the car surged forward, but I understand it was just a sudden loss of braking as the transfer between the different braking mechanisms occurred. Since I was turning onto a highway service road during rush hour, I felt the delay was a danger to me and the occupants of my vehicle.
