On 1/23/09 while pulling on to my street after work, my 2007 Toyota Sienna began making a very "tinny" vibration-like sound (external); then I smelled engine oil. After pulling into the driveway, I popped the hood and looked under the car only to find a massive pool of engine oil and an oil trail leading to "Lake Lubricant"; the dipstick showed almost nothing left in the crankcase. Thinking that the last people to touch anything oil-related were the Jiffy Lube people, I bought 4-5 quarts of oil and took it back the next day to have it examined. It wasn't oil filter, drain plug or oil pan gasket related, as the engine oil was gushing from the top of the engine. I had it towed to the closest Toyota dealer. Found it it's a warranted part, but time consuming and there aren't parts in stock! The sudden and massive oil leak is caused by an external oil tube that carries lubricant from the bottom of the engine to the top for lubricating upper components, like an older motorcycle engine. It can spring a pinhiole leak then expand, causing catastrophic engine failure if the crankcase runs out of oil...and no warning light will go off. This component is also found on Avalon engines (the same that's installed in Siennas). I think the issue may be more widespread than the dealer lets on and Toyota has done nothing with regards to recalling this potentially dangerous and time-consuming, messy issue! So the Japanese automotive manufacturers are flawless, right? Think again. This looks like an engineering mistake, afterthought, makeshift solution to a difficult engine design problem and the material in this vital component is flimsy. Toyota need to RECALL this part on all Avalons and Siennas!
