The latch on the tail gate is melting again! Toyota fixed this about 3 years ago and now it is happening again. When you try to open the tail gate, its like touching chewing gum. They need to use a better product. I hope they will fix it when I contact once again.

You would think paying that price for a Toyota van - you would have a vehicle where when you lift open the liftgate your hand would not turn all BLACK! I can't take it anymore! Every single time I open that liftgate - my finder & hand turn BLACK! We initially solved the problem by putting a piece of paper on the black tar-like substance. But now the paper is gone and I'm getting this BLACK on my hands every time I open the liftgate! Drives me CRAZY!!! When I asked my mechanic about the problem, he said he hadn't heard much about it - although it probably was so insignificant that other owners were solving it on their own. My husband finally got a part to change it but it cost $65! Now he has asked me to FIND HOW TO CHANGE IT so we do not incur the additional; labor fees! Are you kidding me- why should I have to pay $$$ for what Toyota should have fixed!

I am disappointed that this started before I had 50,000 miles on my vehicle but I didn't know what the problem was because I would just keep trying until I could get it to open. Now that it is winter out, I am afraid to put things in the tailgate because many days I can not get it to open. Never had this problem with any of my other vehicles.

I read on Toyota Nation that several people in the south have this problem. Then in the winter, it gets so hard the switch will not work. You have to replace the whole switch and then have the same problem in a few years. Come on Toyota. Crap parts!!!
