At 21K mi rear brakes wore out. Noted poor gas mileage since new (18-19mpg). Noted heavy brake dust on rear wheels, esp. Right. I pointed this our to service manager. Dealer replaced pads and rotors. Said it was due to corrosion. Said he checked, cleaned and lubricated everything. Noted hot rear wheels after 40-40mi. I Jacked car, rear wheels sticking and brake odor. Returned for dealer visit two (brakes were cold by then) - rechecked and road tested said all ok. Rode 50mi and returned to dealer when rear wheel rims were very hot. Dealer replaced both calipers. Problem solved, mpg now 22-24mpg. Dealer said problem with wear was due to corrosion even though : 1- car was only 15mo. old, 2-car spends all winter in Florida, 3- front brakes were fine, normal wear without corrosion. Dealer said calipers were damaged by compressing piston when repair done. Toyota covered calipers but dealer charged me $325 for pads and rotors.
