2009 Toyota Tacoma. Consumer writes in regards to vehicle passenger leaf spring cracked. The consumer stated the dealer did not follow through with the terms of the recall and only replaced the passenger leaf spring, when the driver side should have been replaced as well. Since the driver's side was not replaced, it left the vehicle sitting in an awkward manner. The dealer claimed the would replace the driver side leaf spring. However, they only made the problem worse.

Approx. 6 months ago I received a letter from Toyota that the rear leaf spring was defective. I got the letter after the leaf in my Tacoma had broke and replaced. The letter states I'm supposed to get reimbursed for my expense but as of today I haven't received the instructions how.

Noticed rattle in rear chassie area.inspect found both rear leaf spring broken rubbing near brake lines.asked dealer about issue said not defective.had to immediately order install new springs at great inconvenience and expense. This July 2014. Oct,2014 news release declares 640,000 vehicles defective contact Toyota they say submit invoice parts labor will reimburse. Nov 2014 no word contact Toyota they say "remedy" in works now must wait an undetermined time..no answer to define "remedy" out $865 parts labor..ps Toyota says will not pay labor because owner installed parts..what can I do??
I was driving home from work on 10/10/2014 when I heard a weird sound from under my vehicle. I pulled over and looked under my vehicle and noticed my rear leave spring was snapped in the middle and at a 90 degree angle.
I was driving at approximately 35 mph on a Suburban road. When I drove over any small bumps in the road, a loud metallic clinking sound could be heard issuing from the rear of the vehicle. An inspection revealed that the left leaf spring had broken and was smacking against the rear axle when the rear suspension was put in motion. It was mandatory that I replace the leaf springs on both sides of the vehicle in the interest of safety and drivability. The repair cost me $491 (I have the receipt); the incident was unnerving and caused considerable bother and inconvenience.
After hearing clunking noises in the rear end of the truck, an inspection revealed broken rear leaf springs. The springs were replaced by a local mechanic at a cost of nearly $1100. I consider the failure of the springs to be premature as I do not use the truck for heavy hauling. Research reveals that this is a common problem with this model truck.
Driver's side rear bottom leaf spring failed in fatigue. The failed spring caused damage and deformation to the brake line. I consider this a premature life as this vehicle has not experienced towing or off road use.

8/4/14 the left rear spring broke severing the brake line, leaving her with no ability to stop the truck. 7/12/13 the right rear spring was found to be broken. Both the Toyota dealer and the shop that fixed the springs told me that this was very common in these trucks. Had my daughter lost her brakes ten minutes earlier, she would have been on the interstate and the results could have been tragic.. updated 08-20-14. Updated 08/27/2014
