Excessive premature rusting of frame and components, spring shackles, spare tire area. Trucked failed MA state safety inspection on 11/24/09 and is considered undriveable until repairs are made. I am aware of a recall in effect on or before 12/15/09 and also plan to contact Toyota for an inspection.
I have a 2000 Toyota Tundra. During normal maintenance I was informed that the frame had a severe rust issue. This was so severe that the mechanic had to be extremely cautious when putting the vehicle on the lift as to not damage the frame. The vehicle has approximately 60,000 miles and at this point is almost un safe to drive. The reason for the maintenance was that the shifter cable had rusted through, not allowing me to change gears. I was informed about the recall on the Toyota Tacoma fro this same issue and filed a report with Toyota on this Tundra issue. At this point I have no options. I won't sell a possible dangerous car to anyone else and I doubt I would get any thing fro a trade.
Toyota Tundra year 2000, 4WD,6cyl. Frame total rust, holes in frame, spare tire bracket rusted, tire hanging down few inches from ground, almost caused accident on road. Had to remove tire. Warned by driver in rear of my vehicle, by flashing lights and blowing horn. Time day 11am.

I own a 2000 Toyota Tundra and it failed its annual Pennsylvania state inspection due to a frame rust issue. The Toyota dealership that did the inspection and failed the truck, I assume, knew of a potential problem and thank god, thoroughly inspected the truck's frame. They found a hole in the frame that concerned them to the point that failed the truck's state inspection and I ended up paying $294.25 to have a frame patch welded in to prevent a failure of the frame in the area of the rusted hole. I had the truck undercoated at the time of purchase in 2000 and that undercoating is blistering off, and has been blistering off for a few years. The undercoating was maintained under a ziebart warranty until 2005 when ziebart closed the local franchises. This means the underside of my truck has been without the warranted protection for only four years. This is ridiculous that a truck, that has been as meticulously maintained as mine has been, is experiencing a frame rust issue to the level that it fails a state inspection !!!! the underside of the truck is heavily rusted despite the additional precautions I've taken of undercoating, maintaining the undercoating, and religiously spraying the excessive salt off of the vehicle in the winter months during the times of high exposure. I am extremely concerned about the safety and integrity of my truck every time I get behind its steering wheel now. One of my biggest concerns is, that in the unfortunate event that I would be involved in a collision of significance, the engineering safety standards required to be met regarding frame structural integrity will be grossly compromised by the rotting frame and will no longer be able to offer the designed protection that the engineers calculated. The protective structure will no longer be able to provide the necessary safety buffer for me and my passengers from the extreme energy forces experienced during a life threatening collision when we'll be counting on it with our lives.
We have a 2000 Toyota Tundra, and the complaint is rust, first my bumpers went.,the rear bumper got so rusted that my daughter sat on the bumper and she fell to the ground., I called Toyota, the said call my local dealer.,I did., my local dealer told me they couldn't do nothing about it, they said it wasn't there problem. So at this point I never replaced the bumper because Toyota wanted $400 without putting the bumper on and I can not afford that. Anyway who says a new Toyota bumper would be no good any ways! second and most important is the frame year after year after year..... I tried to apply an undercoat to the frame and then the next year no matter how much under coating I put on the frame it gets like a 100 times worse I think the rust behind the under coating just breaks apart and just falls off as I drive because the year after the rust is 100 times worse!!!! if you would please., look into this asap because im really scared to drive this truck, and I don't want to sell it to someone else because I would be afraid for them and feel terrible if something dangerous happened to us or them, please help! thank you
I have a 2000 Toyota Tundra. The spare tire fell off while driving it a few months ago. After recent state inspection, the entire truck frame is rusted beyond repair.
My 2000 Toyota Tundra failed inspection due to frame rust. The steering rack rusted through and is no longer attached to the frame. I was told not to drive the vehicle until it is repaired. The frame has many areas that are in similar condition.
While I was driving my Toyota Tundra down highway truck started to drive erratically. I took to my mechanic who told me there was significant rust on entire frame. Steering rack had separated from frame and struts were rusted out. Same frame as Tacoma why has Toyota not responded to problem. I called dealer who told me to call Toyota. The call to Toyota was useless. They told me that there was nothing that they could do for me. I wish that somebody would do the right thing and take care of this serious problem. If an accident happens to seriously hurt somebody Toyota will deserve all the suits that will come there way.
In October 2008 I had the truck inspected and was told about unusual amount of frame rust. They gave me a sticker but said it might not pass inspection next time. I took the vehicle to my Toyota dealership and asked them to inspect the rust on the frame. They said it was just surface rust. July 22, 2009 I had it in for an oil change at the dealer and they said I have " some buckling in the frame from excessive rusting." The service advisor said he didn't think it was safe to drive. He suggested I contact Toyota. I will do that tomorrow.
Late spring or early summer of last year I had been driving my family home from the grandparents. We felt a sound louder and problem worse than a pot hole. It was a normal road paved. It was in webster, MA. The truck seemed to be fine until late June the truck started to leak power steering fluid. Took it to the dealer (tri-state Toyota Scion and Dodge). I explained the problem to the customer service lady. She told me about the rust problem they had with both the Tacoma's and Tundra's and said the would check my truck out for frame corrosion. Without showing me they said there was none. Then proceeded to tell me the cost to fix this problem and was a ridiculous amount. It then got inspected by an autobody specialist. Precision auto repair look at it and said the frame is junk just like the Tacoma's. I ask jim audett the owner for a preliminary estimate so I could send to Toyota. The power steering rack had broken away from the frame and chunk's of the frame (metal are falling off this truck). The integrity of this vehicle has been compromised by the corrosion and is not a road worthy vehicle. I spent $19,000 for this truck in early January 2007 about 14 moths before Toyota did the recall on the Tacoma's. I have been given the run around by the dealer and Toyota for almost a year. I have subsequently taken and sent to attorney generals of both Massachusetts and Connecticut to inform them of this potential road hazard to all. It would be greatly appreciated if your Agency could look into this because Toyota is reluctant to stand behind this poor quality vehicle. They have denied there was any corrosion. I own a 2000 Toyota Tundra and was driving North on interstate 95 in Maine. Without warning, the back end of the truck suddenly lifted up off the pavement while traveling at 65 mph. When I regained control of the vehicle, I looked into the rear view mirror to see a tire bouncing erratically across several lanes of northbound traffic. Cars were braking and swerving to avoid collision with the tire and fortunately it came to a rest against the median guardrail without crossing into southbound lanes and without damage to vehicles or injury to drivers. I immediately pulled into the emergency breakdown lane and inspected the truck to find that the spare tire was missing and a large corroded hole existed in the frame from which the tire had been mounted. I retrieved the tire and placed it in the bed. The following Monday I took the truck to the Toyota dealer where it was purchased to received an evaluation from a mechanic of what went wrong and if it can be repaired. The Toyota dealer claimed that they have been seeing significant frame corrosion of Toyota Tundra trucks of this model year, similar to that of Tacoma's which had been recalled. They were unsure that the frame of my vehicle could be successfully repaired, due to the extensive corrosion and perforation. They did say that the vehicle could not pass a safety inspection regardless. It is clear that corrosion to this extreme extent on Toyota Tundra frames warrant attention from the NHTSA, due to the clear and present danger this defect poses to the traveling public. If spare tires fall from the frame mount in this manner, drivers of this model year Toyota Tundra and surrounding vehicles at the time of an incident of this nature are at extreme risk of severe injury and/or death. Toyota was contacted regarding this incident (case # 0905118853) and say that there is currently no program at present to recall any of the vehicles due to the currently low number of complaints.
Very concerned about the rust under my 2000 Toyota Tundra. It was inspected for the initial bed rust in Jan 08 by my local dealer after a local reputable body shop agreed with me that things were not right underneath. Dealer rep dismissed my concerns and did nothing. Now I'm reading about these things falling apart. The below incident date is the date of the inspection. I intend to have another inspection by the dealer I purchased the truck from in the near future.
After watching a news program about Toyota Tundra frames rusting out, I decided to check out my Tundra, and I found large sections of the frame rusted, and chunks of rusted metal would flake off when handled. I am very concerned for myself and passengers as well as other motorists if the frame should just fall apart while traveling at highway speeds. I hope that my complaint combined with others will help you to avert some very serious accidents.
