Tiguan 2.0T 2.0L 4 cyl

I bought this 2009 VW Tiguan used with about 92,000 miles on it and this problem showed up a few months after buying it. This is NOT the first time it's happened. When it first happened I took to the repair shop twice to get the problem finally taken care of. It was at that time that I figured out it was something I could replace myself so that's what I've continued to do. One or 2 go out every few weeks at this point. Replacing the ignition coil is easy enough but at about $27 a coil it's getting expensive and old. This just isn't right. There must be some kind of short making these go out all the time.

Tiguan Highline 2.0L Tsi

  • Automatic transmission
  • 79,225 miles

Accelerated to pass someone uphill and my check engine light came on, EPC light started flashing and my whole car/engine started shaking like I was off-roading. I pulled over, shut off car and towed to dealership. 1st cylinder ignition replaced.

Tiguan ES 2.0L Turbo

  • Automatic transmission
  • 55,300 miles

Car with only 55,000 miles needed spark plugs and new coil. Car rode rough, sped up on me and almost caused an accident. Luckily, I was in my development and only going 25 miles per hour. Very dangerous. Read about prior investigation into this problem with jettas. Should recall.

Tiguan

  • Automatic transmission
  • 36,000 miles

Similar to the first poster. Had a bad ignition coil in 2013 and VW recommended replacing all four because "once one goes out the others soon follow". Now we're in Jan 2016 got back home from vacation to find out the coil was bad again and I need of replacement. I bought my Tiguan new toward the end of 2009 so seems to me a pretty consistent problem rearing its ugly head every 3 years or so. I know it's usually considered inadequate to make a correlation with only two occasions, but considering there's an identical post with almost identical dates and miles maybe there's something more to it than just coincidence.
