When travelling at low speed pulling into or reversing out of a parking bay when at almost full lock, a grinding noise comes from the front wheel area.

The steering assembly should have a longer life expectancy than 70,000 Ks, I've had cars that never had these sorts of problems after 20 years and over 300,000 Ks.
