Outlook XE 3.6L V6

At low speeds, occasionally, turning left or right becomes very difficult. The problem has started to get worse and is not covered under any warranties, my mechanic can't figure out what it is, and the dealer is unwilling to help stating there were no recalls for this sort of thing. There has been no leaking from the rack and pinion nor the steering pump. I am honestly out of ideas and worried about my children's safety when the problem occurs. As a side note the lock button on the drivers side occasionally goes out as well - not sure if there could be any relation between the two. Any suggestions or help would be greatly appreciated.
