CarComplaints.com Notes: Buying the first model year of any vehicle is rarely a good idea. You become a guinea pig for the automaker and they are really not nice to guinea pigs.

The 2008 Enclave has a wide enough range of problems to issue a warning. There's transmission failure under 90k miles, new power steering units costing over $1,300, and enough engine complaints to NHTSA to scare anyone away.

2008 Buick Enclave (as we call it "Christine"). Tail/lift gate opens and closes all by itself. Really! 3 mornings in a row found the car w/ the tailgate standing open. Accused my wife of accidentally hitting the open button on the fob. (Bad idea to accuse wife. Make a note of that). Next day she went shopping while I stayed in the car. Motor running, in Park. Almost crapped my pants when the tail gate went up by itself. As I was praying the gate went back down by itself. Several minutes later, while I was still praying for God to save me from these devils, it did it again. Yikes!!! Shop tried to fix by replacing a switch. Next morning tail gate standing open again. Took it back. They had to completely dismantle the tail gate and replace another switch. Cost $900. It never happened again. Thank GOD it never happened while driving. Only in Park. I'll stick to my F-150.

Received a notice from Buick a couple of months ago communicating another recall, this time for lift gate issues. Apparently, the auto lift gate mechanism can fail, causing the lift gate to fall unexpectedly and cause injury. Although they are owning up to the problem and it will be covered, they said in the letter that they do not yet have the parts to fix it and not to take the car into the dealership for repairs until we receive further direction from them. Still haven't heard anything else.
