CarComplaints.com Notes: Buying the first model year of any vehicle is rarely a good idea. You become a guinea pig for the automaker and they are really not nice to guinea pigs.

The 2008 Enclave has a wide enough range of problems to issue a warning. There's transmission failure under 90k miles, new power steering units costing over $1,300, and enough engine complaints to NHTSA to scare anyone away.

I WAS DRIVING HOME WITH MY FAMILY WHEN MY CAR RANDOMLY STARTED FLASHING CHECK BATTERY. I DIDN'T STOP INITIALLY AND ABOUT 5 MINS LATER THE CAR STARTED FLASHING CHECK BATTERY SYSTEMS. WHEN I CUT THE CAR OFF IT WOULD NOT CRANK AGAIN MY KEYS WERE STUCK IN THE IGNITION AND THE CAR WAS COMPLETELY DEAD. I CHANGED THE BATTERY THE NEXT DAY AND IT STARTED WITH NO PROBLEMS. I DROVE TO THE STORE 5 MINS AWAY AND BY THE TIME I GOT THERE MY TRUCK WAS SMOKING. WE JUMPED OUT CALLED THE FIRE DEPARTMENT AND THEY SPRAYED MY ALTERNATOR OFF WITH SOME KIND OF FOAM. THEY SAID THE TRUCK DID NOT CATCH ON FIRE COMPLETELY BUT THE WAY THE SMOKE WAS GROWING THEY SAID IT WOULD NOT OF BEEN LONG BEFORE MY CAR WOULD OF IGNITED.

Enclave CXL 3.6L V6

  • Automatic transmission
  • 123,000 miles

I was driving with my family, 2 kids and wife, and the lights of the truck started to turn off. It started to smell like something was burning. I stopped and thought it was the battery, so I went and bought a new battery. I installed the new battery and turned on the car. It looked like everything was okay. Then it started to smell like something was burning again, so I looked at the engine and saw that the alternator was smoking and then it caught on fire. I had to get my kids out and had to disconnect the battery again and left it like that. I have had different type of cars but I have never seen something like this. I like this type of car but it usually it marks that the transmission needs service.. I hope I get help and find out why this happened. I don't feel happy driving this car because I feel like its going to catch on fire again... I expect an answer soon.
