C-Max Hybrid SEL 2.0L I4

I discovered that this car suffers from rampant transmission failure- luckily, right before the transmission started to fail. We were fortunately already prepared to get rid of the car. A couple years ago, the car started making a very loud vibrating noise during certain load conditions. It sounded like something major was on the edge of breaking. Then, in October 2019, around 75,000 miles, the transmission started grinding when shifting from park to drive. The car also lurched forward, even when slamming on the brake pedal. It then made a VERY concerning grinding noise while driving, accompanied by shaking. Even when idling, the car was very loud. It sounded like either the engine was working very hard or the radiator fans were on full speed to cool the engine and transmission. I've never heard a sound that loud from the car before. We stopped driving it and got rid of the car before the $7,000 repair bill could surface. I didn't file this under "transmission failure" because I'm not absolutely certain that it failed after selling it, but all signs pointed to that. What a wimpy design from Ford- a transmission that can't handle being driven at highway speeds, which is supposed to be the least damaging condition for driving.

I had problems with the C-Max transmission. It started as whining sound and was getting louder by time. I took the car to workshop and told gearbox needs replacement. It cost around 1400 dollars. I know many friends who had the same problem and had to fix or replace gearbox. Hope you will hear from them soon.

C-Max Hybrid SEL 2.0L

  • CVT transmission

Like others with a CVT Transmission that has failed, only to discover they want over $9K for the car to move again. I bought a 2013 Ford C-Max SEL in 2015 and now 9/2018 the transmission is done at 117K miles. What an awful product to only be designed to last for under 110k and then render the car useless and a complete loss.

As another person wrote, I too still owe a ton on it and will have to eat it. NEVER buy a FORD car or anything with a CVT Transmission. The Mfg like them because the help them reach MPG goals for their lineup, but for consumers we're not saving that much in gas vs. the HUGE cost when they burn out in half the time.

BE WARY OF ANY FORD CAR!!!!!
