We've only owned the 2004 for a couple of years, bought it at a good price although it had 83 k miles on it. We weren't worried about it since it was only gonna be driven around town on the weekends. Now we know why we got it for the price it was, the original owner probably already had problems with it and got rid of it when he could. Now the dealership wants 2k to overhaul a transmission that's only five years old??!! This is a ripoff from ford since this many people have a problem with the transmission.

Explorer Sport Trac XLT 4.0L V6

  • Automatic transmission

O/D light flashing and around 30 km/per hr the RPM's go up to about 4 and the truck shifts hard into gear, I took it to MR. Transmission, they replaced the "Range Finder Switch" paid $270 for that, 20 minutes after leaving the shop, the transmission shifts hard into gear again and blink blink, O/D light starts flashing again..I called the mechanic immediately and told him, truck was acting the same as when I first brought it into him. He informs me, its probably internal transmission problem and to bring it back in and to replace the tranny will cost approx. $4000.00, I still owe $12,000.00 on this piece of crap. I am sick to my stomach over this. I babied this truck, regular service, drove it normally, all for what??? It's complete B.S. only 58,000km on it. Never ever again will I buy a Ford. I might call Ford, however after seeing hundreds of complaints from other explorer owners who had the same problem since the 90's, I doubt they will do anything. my warranty was 36months/60,000km, it has only 58,000 but is 4 years old...if anyone can offer me the right solution to fixing this problem I would greatly appreciate it..
