Operating vehicle on clear day, traveling on highway in 5th gear and not increasing speed. Heard loud noise that was originally thought to be a flat tire. Upon inspection, all tires were fine. Noise became louder when driving and accompanied by clanking metal sound and smell of burning rubber. Had vehicle towed to mechanic who advised that the rear gears had separated from the housing and destroyed the entire rear differential. The cause of this issue is still unknown.
