Taurus SHO 3.5L V6

  • Automatic transmission
  • 58,000 miles

I had the engine start misfiring recently with shuddering/stuttering at speed, with the check engine light (CEL) flashing, fuel smell in the cabin, and billowing smoke from the exhaust. I was hoping it was just spark plugs, but I'd been oblivious to the ticking time bomb that the 2010-2011 Taurus SHO is with engine (and injector) problems. Two cylinders had misfires and needed new injectors, but as is standard practice they replaced all of the injectors.

Looking back, on at least three other occasion in the cars history I experienced misfiring and flashing CEL at speed, always on long road trips. I'd pull over and shut the car off, and then restart after a bit and the symptoms would end and there'd be no more performance problems for awhile. On those previous occasion there wasn't any fuel smell or billowing smoke, so maybe like earthquake tremors the injectors were just in early stages of failing. Perhaps Ford would have fixed one or two of the injectors under warranty, probably only to have another one of them fail later on. Other problems with my SHO I've experienced, that I've learned from others on this site are somewhat common include: vehicle stalling at intersections, chrome peeling from tail lights, and air conditioning/dual-zone malfunction (never had proper trouble shooting accomplished with this problem to save money).
