CarComplaints.com Notes: We're not used to seeing any major problems with Hyundai, which makes the early signs of trouble with the 2013 Elantra very surprising, in a bad way.

Early trends show problems with the steering wandering / pulling to one side along with premature tire wear. Elantra owners have tried sensor adjustments, wheel alignments, even replacing axles, most with no luck. Hyundai has made vehicle buybacks through arbitration, but that rarely works out well financially for owners in the end.

Also there is a pattern of complaints about the 2013 Elantra brakes grinding at very low mileage. It seems there was a bad batch of OEM pads & rotors, but so far Hyundai is not doing a recall. Instead Hyundai issued a TSB & dealers have been replacing pads & rotors on a per-complaint basis.

The final straw is that for several years in a row, Elantra owners report significantly lower gas mileage than the EPA estimates, & there's a small trend of engine problems.

When driving my vehicle the transmission shifts very rough and unexpected. It happens at all different times and situations never giving any warnig, but is very unnerving and making me cautious to drive it when it happens. It has been to the dealership twice and so far they cannot gert it to surface for them so they cannot fix it. The car is at the dealership now , I took it on 8/20/15, they called me and said it was ready to pick up so I called them back and asked what they found and they said nothing and could not fix what they could not find.

Update from Oct 10, 2015: On 23 Sep 2015, I called my dealership (Freemand Hyundia) my car was slamming when taking it out of park going into drive and an engine light was on. They told me to bring it in then. I did but the engine light went out. When I got there they told me maybe the engine recorded a code so they could diagnos it. It did they scanned test code P0713 trans temp sensor circuit high, system found trans harness & sensor open. They replaced trans harness & sensor per TSB 14-AT-010. Since then I have had no reoccurrence of any trans problem. Praise the Lord.

Elantra Limited 4.0L

  • Automatic transmission
  • 1,938 miles

Somewhat frustrating. It started rough downshifting from 3rd to 2nd at 1,938 kms. The tac would jump from 1200 to 1600 rpms as it downshifted at approximately 50 kms. I've never experienced this before in my 2011 Elantra Limited so I took it to my dealership to investigate the concern. I note on my invoice the technician who worked on my car commented that he, "reset the adaptive valves and re-learnt transmission shifting points". It seemed to be fine after that however after about two weeks or 250 kms the same issue returned.

I took it back to the dealership and discussed it with the service manager who didn't seem to be too disturbed about it, inferring this wasn't really a problem, but, on my insistence, he would investigate it again in a week or so (next opening for an appointment). I was told that the tech who had worked on it initially wasn't in today. I'm getting concerned. In the 40+ years I've been driving vehicles, I would not describe this concern as, "not really being a problem..."
