I have read that !any people have the same driver's seat issue. The holes for the bolts has been shredded completely and the dealership tried to charge $3,500 to repair it. It's a defect that should be fixed for free. It under the seat, how can the owner destroy that. 2) the head light covers gets this discoloration or grime on the inside decreasing the brightness by 45% at night, this didn't happen in my Bronco. I called Chrysler and they said the recall # listed online didn't match the format of the numbers in their system to do research. What? this is ridiculous, fix your recalls Chrysler!!!

My rear corner brake lights constantly have issues either in the taillight assembly or the bulb installation connection -- I am still not sure where the issue is really. I will replace the bulb and in 3 months or so my brake light is out on one side then a short time later the other side. I can't tell you how many Jeep I see with at least one brake light being out. Also if my lights are on, then both rear brake lights go out. If I turn the lights off, maybe only one brake light will not work. I've had several people tell me when they are behind me that I have no brake lights, which means if they were not paying attention they would have hit me! and as we all know, paying attention is a huge issue today with so many cell phone distractions. I am shocked there is not a recall on the Grand Cherokee that I can find on my original factory tail lights.

Although no accident yet, I wanted to say that I have never received any notice from fca about the "customer satisfaction campaign" (because although the gas tank hangs under the rear bumper, year 2000 was not included in the "recall" trailer hitch deal). I bought it new and am still living at the same address. I also wanted to note that another issue with the gc is that the brake and tail lights often stop working. The socket gets scorched and you have to go take it apart, pry the contacts up just right and put aluminum foil under them (google Grand Cherokee brake lights). That works for a while, then you have to do it again. I've been stopped twice in 6 months for it. Sometimes the taillight works but actually goes out when you step on the brake. In any case, having a gas tank prone to exploding when rear ended along with brake light issues is not a good thing. The door locks on the passenger side also cannot be unlocked except from inside the vehicle, while the drivers side have to be locked manually (again, it's all over google. It's called the angry duck for the noise the locks make. I have been waiting for NHTSA to make a other announcement about this - the news was they were going to in a week or so, but that was 3 weeks ago. Thanks [xxx] [xxx]@gmail.com information redacted pursuant to the Freedom Of Information Act (FOIA), 5 U.S.C. 552(B)(6).'

I have had to replace my right side brake light assembly four times. For some reason, it continues to go bad. This is getting really expensive and inconvenient, as I continue to get stopped by the police for this problem. I've been told that this has been an issue with many of these trucks. I have had this truck for four years.

When headlights are on and you step on brakes all rear lights go out. I have now been cited for this twice and warned 3 times. I have had this issue addressed with 2 local mechanics who thought they fixed but yet again this is broken. I am giving all my hard working money in fees for this issue.

I have had ongoing problems with my brake and tail lights. I have replaced the housing, sockets and bulbs. The bulbs overheat and melt the plastic which causes the lights to malfunction. The tail lights will work sometimes but the brake lights may not work when the tail lights are lit. There have been times when the tail lights don't work and the brake lights do even though they are the same bulb. I have seen other Jeep on the road with the same problem and have seen multiple complaints on internet. I've contacted Jeep and they claim to have no knowledge of the problem.

The power in doors windows works off and on. There will be no point to lock your door and then you can't unlock the door. The windows sometimes roll down and times they don't. the lighting on the inside of the car comes off and on without being turned on. Happened on its own anytime the car is started and can't be turned off at times. The dash lights don't work sometimes blinkers work off and on any electrical in the inside of Jeep is messed up.

The contact owns a 2000 Jeep Grand Cherokee. The contact stated that the brake light bulb would overheat the housing and melted the area where the circuit board was located. The failure recurred intermittently on both the passenger and driver sides. The dealer advised the contact that the housing was causing the failure and did not provide a remedy besides replacing the housing, which the contact stated was done twice prior to the recent failure. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure however, did not offer any assistance. The current mileage was 198,000 and the approximate failure mileage was 120,000.

Rear taillights stop working, contacts deteriorate and burn. This is a serious problem because taillights will go out without warning to driver and can cause an accident or the driver to be ticketed by law enforcement for faulty equipment released by Jeep. Taillights have to be replaced.

In 2007, my rear tail lights stopped working. They would not work if the head lights were turned on. However if the head lights were off the rear tail lights were working. There is no warning light that informs you of this failure and so it was not until I was stopped by the police that I was even aware of the problem. I got the rear lights replaced, not knowing then that this was a common problem. However, now three years later, the lights have failed again. Same exact problem. No warning lights, it just so happened a family member saw that my lights were out. The replacement parts are expensive and obviously this is a common problem known by Jeep/Chrysler.

The contact owns a 2000 Jeep Grand Cherokee. The contact stated that the seatbelts don't retract. He also experienced failures with the fog light and the cooling fan. The vehicle was taken to a local mechanic for diagnostic testing with the cooling fan failure and the mechanic replaced the radiator; but, the failure wasn't corrected. Report 19961050 was filed with the manufacturer who stated that the vehicle wasn't included in recall 06V199000 engine and engine cooling: Cooling system: Fan and they would reimburse him for the repairs. The vehicle wasn't repaired. The failure mileage was 83,000 and the current mileage was 94,000.

Grand Cherokee

  • 125,000 miles
2000 Jeep Grand Cherokee rear brake lights out because of defective design. Brake lights stop working when headlights turned on. Brake lights work fine when headlights off. Problem design is in the tail light assembly. When you remove the light socket for the tail/brake light in the light assembly, you will see 3 silver contact points inside the black plastic ring. Two are grouped together and there is one that is opposite of the two. The one by itself is the ground; the other two are the contacts for the tail light and brake light. The problem lies with the ground connector. You should notice that the ground contact is depressed into the plastic and the plastic itself is slightly warped down. Most cars have light sockets with their wiring attached. The socket twists into the lamp assembly. On the Grand Cherokee, the socket does not have the wiring attached. Instead, the wiring goes into the lamp assembly and the socket has three electrical contacts that, when twisted into the assembly, will make the contact. What seems to be the most frequent malfunction is that the electrical contacts (which make contact with their respective electrical paths when they are inserted into the assembly) are pressed tight to ensure good contact with the assembly...and on many taillights, the plastic ring containing the respective paths often begins to separate from the fatigue of the contacts pressing so hard. Of the three contacts (rear tail light, rear brake light and ground), the ground is what most commonly loses its contact due to fatigue cracking. This is a serious safety issue because often drivers are unaware that there is a problem. It only happens when the headlamps are on, so if checked in daylight, the problem often goes undetected. Only when another driver or the police point it out does it looked at. This is a widespread problem that occurs for nearly every 2000 Jeep Grand Cherokee. It is not an issue of will it happen, rather when is it going to happen!

Jeep Grand Cherokee Laredo 2000 105,000 miles got pulled over tonight for not having brake lights when the brake is pressed. Was told that I would be at fault if someone would rear end me. Searched online, there are thousands of complaints about this same issue on the make/mode of my Jeep. This is not the first time this has happened. I have had my brake light assemblies changed, I have changed numerous brake lights. According to a few sites I read, the fix is because the ground connector on the brake light housing is cheaply made and doesn't contact with the lights. This is a safety issue and there should absolutely be a recall on this issue - even after 10 years. With all the complaints online, I'm really shocked that there isn't a recall from Jeep about this very issue.

I have a 2000 Jeep Grand Cherokee.. I have the same as all other 2000 jgc owners are having. Been using coolant every few weeks needs to be topped off.. fan was replace due to recall. Had to replace fan control under headlight. Last year was overheating. Replaced water pump/ thermostat. Overheating again. Just replaced thermostat today. Did not fix the problem. Transmission has been shifting hard for the past year and a half. I replaced parts in transmission as suggested by dealer. But it did not fix problem..replaced radiator around may of 09 still having cooling problems. I replaced so many sensors that have failed that I cant remember them all. I still have 1 more year of payments on this vehicle.. its hard to make payments when I have been buying so many parts to try to keep this car running. Bad door seals, they are too small (short or shrinking) it lets water come in back passenger area. Always smells musty inside.. black mold in the rainy season. Taillight brake light on one only works part time. Replaced 3 door latches. Including one on rear hatch.

Rear brake lights continue to fail within 12-20 months time even after the entire tail light is replaced. This has occurred for both rear tail lights in my 2000 Jeep Grand Cherokee Laredo. We're having to replace both of them every 12-20 months now. The tail light circuit area is known to be a Jeep defective, as I now discovered.
