Months ago my active headrest deployed while sitting in a parking lot. This is a major problem with this vehicle. I was one of the lucky ones and Jeep did pay to replace the headrest. However, recently the plastic clips on the back rest of the same (passenger) seat have failed and come apart and Jeep is telling me that they may or may not pay for it. This is incredible. A recall needs to be issued as this is a safety hazard. It's only a matter of time before this happens on the drivers side too. How many complaints does it take for a recall? Will they wait until someone is seriously injured or worse?

Please folks, if this has happened to you report it to the NTHSA. I don't know how many complaints it takes to force a recall but I suspect there are many others out there that have not reported it. Don't go to your dealer for replacement. First contact Jeep customer service directly and make them pay for it. I'm about to battle them over my back rest clips now. I'm not paying for it and if there is an accident and something bad happens due to their faulty equipment I will be suing them. I suggest anyone who has been injured do the same. There is enough proof on the internet to show this is faulty equipment and Jeep is aware of it and choosing to do nothing. REPORT REPORT REPORT and call Jeep Chrysler Dodge directly.

I got into my car Sunday morning on my way to the gym and noticed it 5 minutes later as my head was being pushed too far forward while driving. After the gym, I looked with a flashlight and noticed it was broken up, including a silver pin that was on the back floor.

active head restrain deploys unexpectedly

I was driving my 2014 Jeep Grand Cherokee Limited - with 101,500 miles on the odometer - alone, at 35 mph on a smooth, straight road, when I heard an explosion behind me and was hit in the back of the head. The driver's side spring-loaded active head restraint had deployed while I was driving.

I had not been involved in an accident. I did not hit a pothole. I immediately took my jeep to the dealership where I'd purchased it 6 weeks prior and was told by the mechanics the plastic retaining clips broke, which is what caused the headrest to deploy. It is going to cost $700 - $800 to repair.

I got inside my Jeep, which was parked inside the garage, I the afternoon to go to work and noticed that the driver side head restraint deployed. I do not know, when I had came home from work the previous night and got of the Jeep everything was fine. I looked in the owners manual and followed the reset process, this did not work. I called the dealer, they said that this is a well known problem and that it was not covered under the warranty. The dealer wants over $800 to replace the head restraint.

Grand Cherokee Overland 3.6L Vvt

  • Automatic transmission
  • 61,800 miles

While driving my Jeep Grand Cherokee Overland in normal driving conditions, my wife and I were at complete stop at a stop light. About 20 seconds later, my passenger side headrest malfunctioned and deployed hitting the my wife in the back of the head. The headrest deployed and exploded with a lot of force. It was a very scary situation. We had no idea that the headrests were capable of that.

Upon further investigation I saw that the plastic clips that keep the headrest from going off had been completely shattered and broken making the headrest unfixable. When I took it to the Jeep dealership (Puente Hills, City of Industry, CA) they told me, since the headrest deployed and the clips were broken, that they couldn't reset it and the headrest needed to be replaced. I am shocked that a 'safety feature malfunctioning is a problem that I need to pay to fix. (about $680 for a replacement plus labor cost) this could have resulted in a serious crash and injuries. This style headrest needs to recalled.

Also other Jeep owners need to be aware of this. It's very unsafe and Jeep needs to replace the headrest with a completely different safer headrest. I fear now that when I'm driving that the driver side headrest could malfunction and explode at the back of my head resulting in serious injuries. I've talked to other Jeep owners with the same style vehicle and none of them were aware of this 'safety feature with the headrest. And not one single mention in the owners manual about this deploying headrest.

People need to be aware!!

While driving, I heard this loud noise. It scared me because I didn't know if my tire blew or I ran over some object. I got out and checked my car, not realizing my headrest had deployed on the passenger side. Luckily no one was sitting on that side.

Grand Cherokee Limited 3.6L V6

  • Automatic transmission
  • 95,000 miles

The passenger active head restraint (headrest) deployed while I was sitting in the car, parked, with the engine off. The suddenness and loudness of it gave me quite a shock. It deploys with a significant amount of force. Upon further examination I could see what happened. The head restraints have a very large spring mechanism, which is held into place by some plastic tabs. These plastic pieces have an electro-mechincal mechanism that allows them to be pulled back in the event of a crash, releasing the head restraint and pushing it forward to brace against whiplash. In my case, those plastic tabs had suddenly broken and allowed the spring mechanism to release without an electrical input. It appears that the design of this is flawed, as the plastic is clearly not strong enough to sufficiently restrain the energy contained within the compressed spring. Jeep considered this to be "normal wear and tear" and refused to replace it as I am out of warranty. The cost would have been over $750, so I just live with the head restraint in the extended position. I hope that my driver side restraint doesn't do the same thing someday, while I'm driving. It would be likely to cause an accident.
