Turned on the vehicle to and it was running rough. Like it was misfiring or not getting sufficient air. This was a new issue. Thought it was a clogged filter or timing problem, called dealership to make appt to bring in. Began to drive home. I got no more than 2 miles when the check engine light went on. The oil light went on. The vehicle began to stall. Temp gauge pinned at HIGH and then the car failed, leaving me with minimal steering on the road. As I put it into PARK steam began to come out of the engine compartment on the passenger side.

Had car towed to a dealership. I was told that the engine had completely failed. Service rep told me "there is coolant mixed with the oil" "the seals broke" "there is a hole in the engine" and "there is nothing [you] did to cause this, sometimes it just happens." I was told the engine could not be repaired because of the "hole" and that I had to have it replaced. Quoted price for a used engine with 60k miles was $7440. I talked to a private shop which quoted me $4500-5500.

I was going to get it repaired because I really liked my car, but found this site and see that the Mazda CX-9 which shares this engine, has similar problems. I am now going to tow the car to my house and report this issue to Mazda. Sounds like there is some kind of defect.
