We don't have a lot of complaints on file for the Mazda Protege (although feel free to add yours here) -- it's either not very popular ... or it's very, very good.
The 2002 Mazda Protege has the most complaints, & the most-reported problem is with the 1998 Protege for alternator squeels under load.

actuator broke in the door -- 2003 Protege:
This is another testimony to poor quality of Mazda parts. Initially Mazda refused to sell actuators and was trying to sell whole lock assembly for 267 dollars plus 13% sales tax. I was fortunate enough to have a friend who had replaced assembly for me. Read more »

Mazda is very prone to rust, and should be rustproofed as soon as purchase. Unfortunately rubber and plastic parts on Mazda and Honda are easily damaged by oil based rustproofing. Read more »
