The real problem: Transfer case gear broke a tooth, yet showed no signs of leaking seals.
Clicking noise was thought to be a CV axle failure at first, and the Driver's side CV joint had some play and a torn inner boot. Replaced the Driver's side CV axle and output shaft seal, yet the clicking remained. Upon reversing the vehicle out of the driveway to take it to a mechanic, it lurched and jerked, and later a total rear differential failure was discovered, caused by excessive vibrations from the transfer case.
The vehicle was 3,000Km under the extended warranty, but 6 months past the time limit. Nissan dealer refused to provide any assistance. I spoke to a former Nissan technician who said every single Murano that has ever towed a trailer would come back to the dealer with either a transfer case or transmission total failure.
Solution: Scrap the vehicle (Parts estimate alone was $4,500).
