Nissan is doing more than repairing an oil leak by replacing the seal that was leaking. The service advisor told us there was a list of parts involved and it was not a simple problem. It is now January 21st; 6 days since we dropped the Rogue off in the middle of our vacation and picked up a rental. Work was supposed to be completed yesterday. We did not get the phone call we expected.

Update from Jan 30, 2018: The Rogue was finally available to us on January 24th after being inspected at the dealership on January 15th. There was a part they could not get for 8 days.. The work order quoted a technical service bulletin NTB 17-003. That bulletin indicated how after confirmation of a leak the case was to be resealed. O rings, seals, bearings and side gears were replaced. We were given an extension of the base warranty to 5 years and 100,000 kilometers (62,150 miles) for our experience. There was no mention of any cause or upgraded parts.

Update from Mar 30, 2018: On January 25th they had received all the parts and completed all work. That made the down time 10 days in total. We accumulated $609.00 in rental expenses, no hotel and no meals while finishing our vacation. After waiting 7 weeks $309 of the rental expense was denied due to a road side assistance maximim of $100 plus an internal decision to limit policy adjustment.

It is clear to me that the transfer case or proportioning differential could have run out of oil resulting in property damage, personal injury or death. Nissan has an internal bulletin outlining the overhaul procedure required in the event of a leak. They are replacing many parts due to the inability of dealership technicians to determine how much oil has escaped and how much internal damage has occured. The bulletin number is NTB17003 and it site the Rogue, Murano and Pathfinder AWD models.

This should be a recall.
