CarComplaints.com Notes: The 2013-2017 Nissan Sentra has an expensive CVT transmission failure defect that shows up plainly in our complaint data.

In late 2019, the CVT defect was subject to a class action settlement. However the settlement only covers transmission repairs up to 7 years after purchase or 84,000 miles (whichever occurs first).

Because many owners commonly drive 20,000 miles/year or more, Sentra owners experiencing CVT transmission problems may find they are not covered by this settlement due to the mileage limitation.

I was traveling to work, live 45 mins from work. After about 4 uses of the brakes during my trip, all the sudden when I hit the brake pedal, brakes were very hard to push, like the power assist stopped working, had about 4 braking points after, still no brake assist. My last 2 braking points, brakes ended up working fine.

My wife used the car a couple days prior & she experienced the same thing, not sure what to repair & hoping for some insight to this problem before a crash happens. This problem just started & the 2 times it has happened, it seems to repair itself, so intermittent of a problem, scares me to drive it let alone having my wife & children use the car.

Update from Jan 17, 2024: I have car into dealer, this problem has been going on every day. Still intermittent brakes not having power assist. Hoping dealer has a solution

Update from Jan 19, 2024: Had Nissan dealer check over car, they have not found anything, so far in the last 2 days, the problem has not presented itself.

I purchased my 2013 Nissan Sentra in 2016. I recently had to replace the brake master cylinder@ 65,000 miles (NOT OK!) This should not be happening with a car that is barly 6 years old. I would brake and the pedal would go all the way to the floor, sometimes rolling while the pedal was pushed down! I was scared to drive it, especially with my child in the back seat! I also had the transmission fail on me a year ago @ 55,000 miles!

I know Nissan had to know of the problems associated with this year of car, it should have NEVER been on their lot for sale. It's not safe and has been one problem after another. NEVER again will I buy a Nissan and I ward friends and family from purchasing vehicles from there too.

Son driving last week when brake pedal went straight to floor then came back with a couple pumps of the brake pedal. Thought maybe a vacuum hose might have popped off but everything looked fine under hood. Feels like it needs to be bled but the system has never been opened and there is no leak evident and fluid level is unchanged. It is doubtful that bleeding the brakes will change anything. Really don't know where to start, replaced pads a year ago and brakes were great till last week.

I bought a new Nissan so I would not have any major issues to deal with. Then at 37,000 miles, the brakes go out. This is NOT what I expected from Nissan in regards to quality. What a disappointment. This is my last Nissan.

i keep losing brake pressure and the car will roll. I'll pump the brake and it will return to normal. i recently had the front brakes replaced, rear cleaned and adjusted, and a brake fluid flush. i took it to the dealer and he said everything was fine and when they tested it nothing happened. I'm going to bring it back and describe the problem a little better but i would like to have some sort of potential fix for this issue

The entire week of April 11-April 15, 2016 - I would stop at a light, stop sign etc and my brakes would work for a second and then go all the way to the floor. I called my mechanic and stopped by for him to check my brake fluids, and he drove the car. He told me all fluids were fine and said he thought it was the master cylinder although he was surprised that a car with only 30,000 miles would have a problem with the master cylinder. He suggested I take it to the dealer as it would be covered under the warranty.

I drove right to the dealer and scheduled an appointment for the next Monday morning. I had to reschedule my appointment to Wednesday April 20, 2016. They kept my car most of the day trying to replicate the problem. They could not. Tim Dahle Nissan is the best Nissan in Utah - I love them!!! I want to go on record that this car has a problem and should a situation occur that can be traced to this issue I want it on the record. There is a problem.

Drive car 90% highway miles, hardly no braking ever used. Master cylinder went out in three years. I've had six vehicles and only had one master cylinder go out and that was an old ford in the 70's after 12 years, 280K miles of short driving use. Found this site looking for problems with the master cylinder for 2013 Nissan Sentras.

Sentra 4 cyl

  • Automatic transmission
  • 17,000 miles

We bought a new 2013 Nissan Sentra for our daughter. It is about 1 1/2 years old with about 17,000 miles on it. She was on her way home from school, in stop and go traffic, and had just accelerated when she attempted to stop again. She said she tried to stop but the brake pedal went all the way to the floor with no resistance. Then she tried pumping them and they locked up and the car wouldn't stop. So, she rear ended the car in front of her and BOTH of the airbags deployed! No one was in the car with her and there was nothing in the passenger seat.

The officer at the scene didn't think the airbags should have deployed in his experience working accidents. There was hardly any visible damage to the cars involved. Most of the cost to repair it was from the airbags. I contacted Nissan because I learned that the NHTSA was investigating these cars for brake problems. I requested an inspection and they sent a "third party" investigator to retrieve the data off the EDR and inspect the car. Of course, they could not find anything wrong with the car and the data did not show any brake failure. According to Nissan they find "no basis to offer financial assistance in this matter at this time"! I just want them to admit there's something wrong and buy back this car.

What parent in their right mind would put their child back in that car??? Besides that, she's scared to and refuses to drive it. I don't think it's a coincidence that other people, even though it's just a few, are describing the same that she did. I guess they won't do anything until someone gets killed!
