2006 Pontiac G6 (Page 10 of 11)

CarComplaints.com Seal Of Avoid Like The Plague

CarComplaints.com Notes: The 2006 Pontiac G6 has major problems with two areas fairly critical to the act of driving... steering & safety.

The 2006 G6 has a major defect trend with electronic power-assisted steering failure. The power steering cuts out while driving, making it extremely difficult to steer. G6 owners typically report spending $600 - $1,200+ to fix the problem, replacing either the entire steering column or the power assist motor.

In March 2010, GM recalled 1.3 million vehicles for this exact problem "...after receiving 1,100 complaints of power steering failures." However the 2006 G6 wasn't included in that recall.

In July 2010, GM issued a "Special Coverage Adjustment" — TSB #10183 — covering "certain" (not all) 2005, 2006 & 2008 Pontiac G6's for this power steering issue, up to 10 years/100k miles. However a large number of 2006 G6 owners have reported they were not covered by this campaign, based on VIN#.

As of late 2013 the NHTSA had well over 700 steering complaints on file for the 2006 G6, with 21 crashes & 12 injuries. The NHTSA closed their initial investigation in 2007, having determined that losing your power steering going over 15-20 mph isn't a big deal & that most crashes occurred at slow speeds, so not a safety risk. Ridiculous? Yep, we think so too.

The 2006 G6 also has an expensive problem with "popping" or "clunking" noises when turning, & that issue extends to newer model years as well.

Factor in the 2006 Pontiac G6's poor side impact protection & you end up with a vehicle you should steer clear of.

The power steering has gone out on my 2006 Pontiac G6 without warning. There are several complaints prior to mine some involving wrecks. My vehicle is all I have to Transport me back & forth to work & I'm terrified. This vehicle has several other issues including the camshaft sensor, blown struts but none as dangerous as the power steering going out. There need to be a recall of this car before someone gets hurt.

1. a few months after the warranty ran out I noticed a cracking in the paint on the hood only. The car is washed and waxed regularly with no unusual products. Paint has continued to deteriorate on the hood only (rest of the car is fine) and is now chipping through the clear coat entirely and to color underneath. I expect this will soon be flaking right off! 2. around same time paint problem started, cd player stopped working. 3. have experienced intermittent electrical shorts/problems with the console and have had to reset the clock and temp many times in addition to faulty "service airbag soon" warning that comes on then and disappears for months at a time. 4. within last few months, have begun smelling strong odor of gasoline outside the car even several hours after it has been turned off...fuel fill ups don't increase or dissipate this. Smell seems to be getting worse (intensifying) over time, however, although I cannot detect a leak or any noticeable change in the fuel economy. 5. several months after warranty ended began having difficulty starting car on "hot starts"...car cranks but doesn't ignite (same in hot and cold weather). This became more frequent until suddenly it completely reversed itself. Now "hot" starts are generally fine, cranking and non ignition typically happens on "cold" starts (same in hot and cold weather). For a car purchased with 29K miles and is now only at 66K I say this is deplorable! all these things occurred after 36K warranty ended but within the first 20-30K miles put on car. Ridiculous! my last car was a Plymouth and ran fine well over 100K (only major job was replacing timing belt @ 100K)...I don't think I can anticipate the same kind of longevity from this car. Considering the other serious problems raised concerning steering and everything else, I don't know what to do with it.

I own a 2006 Pontiac G6, while driving the veh all the dash board lights will begin to flash on and off of the veh to include the security, temp and battery lights. The battery light will however stay on, also at this time the message display will begin to display nearly every message that is possible, then while the car is in motion regardless of speed the power steering will go out and stay out for various periods of time. This originally occurred 1 time, we took the veh to the dealership who diagnosed that the alternator would shut down after reaching a certain temp so they replaced it, it was fine about 1 month before beginning to do the same thing this time on a very frequently almost to the point it does it now every time the vehicle is started. I have done alot of research on this issue and have found that there have been quite a few complaints for the same exact issues made to Pontiac/GM by owners of this vehicle and GM seems to be ignoring the problem. I would like this issue addressed before someone dies on the roadway, because if it is not as soon as the incident makes the news you can be assured alot of people will be going to the news saying that this problem has been brought to the attention of GM and the NHTSA.

The brake lights on my car only work properly on an intermittent basis. The brake lights come on when the brake pedal is not engaged and the brake lights will stay on at times when the brake pedal is no longer engaged. The cruise control will also just disengage while driving down the road or fail to set a speed when trying to set. There is a current recall on this exact problem with cars like mine. However, GM claims that my vehicle is not included in this recall as the defective part/issue is not on my vehicle according to the VIN number issued.

I have recently did a tune up on my 2006 Pontiac G6 just plugs and plug wires. When my wife told me the car locked it steering wheel upon a quick take off I then drove the car again and also had two lock ups with me. After that happen to us we never really do any fast takeoffs with the car. This happen 3 times in the month of January. This only happens with a takeoff and all the panel lights act like they turn off with all gauges drop in off position, but the car still running. Im not sure if this is part of the defect, but for the past 9 months this car has been real hard to start up and no lights display for a check engine. I have taken this car in for a computer diagnostics test and nothing was found to be wrong with the car. The dealership told me to get a new key and I did and it didn't help.

I have a G6 and it has a major power steering problem and it has gotten to the point I wont even drive the car anymore. You can be driving and it will pull you off the road or into oncoming traffic I almost went into the creek and that is when I parked it. I just wonder how many ppl has to be hurt before they recall these cars. Im basically making a payment on something I cant even drive. I have had to replace the seatbelt sensor and the idle arm and I cant plug in the cell phone charger because it blows the fuses every time I do. And there has been times that when I went to put the car in park I would not go I would have to turn off the key, restart the car and then put it in park. I would advise ppl not to buy these cars. They are a hazard and not safe at all. They are just a money pit and an accident waiting to happen.

I was preparing to make a left turn and my steering wheel locked up and I was unable to complete the turn. I was making a left onto the interstate, thankfully no cars were behind me, so I turned my car off and back on and the problem corrected. Upon making another left turn into my parking lot at work the steering failed again, this time with vehicles behind me. I was able to maneuver away from the flow of traffic and turn the engine off and back on. This vehicle has done this almost every morning without fail. It only does it when I make a left turn and I notice there's a "scraping" or "scrubbing" sound when I begin to make a left turn. This is ridiculous and General Motors needs to do a recall asap. I know they don't want a lawsuit which could result if this isn't resolved if, god forbid, someone is involved in a serious accident because of this. It's dangerous because you never know when the power steering will fail or where you're at when it fails. The government or GM needs to step in and do something soon!

I was driving my 2006 Pontiac G6 on 31 October 2009, I turn off the interstate and the power steering locked. Power steering lit on the radio and the wheel was hard to turn. I finally got to autozone and brought some fluid, but found out that there is no where to put it. I did some research and found out that this is electrical problem. I think GM need to do recall on this problem before some seriously get hurt.

The contact owns a 2006 Pontiac G6. While driving approximately 4 mph on normal road conditions; a chiming noise sounded inside the vehicle. The "power steering" warning light indicator illuminated on the instrument panel; suddenly, there was a loss of power steering. The driver experienced extreme difficulty maneuvering the steering wheel. The warning indicator illuminated intermittently. The contact was able to turn the vehicle off, restart it, and continue driving with caution. The vehicle was taken to an authorized dealer for inspection and the failure was contributed to a faulty power steering assembly module. The vehicle was repaired for the malfunction at the cost of $734.25. In addition, there were failures with the steering column sensor and the front driver side door latch sensor. The vehicle has not been repaired for these malfunctions at this time. The failure mileage was 50,969 and the current mileage was 54,000.

I have a 2006 Pontiac G6. My steering wheel gets really tight when turning in any direction then it becomes extremely loose. My radio will not play any cd's and I had to take it to dealership once to have it replaced because it caused my battery to die. My right passenger light has water in it. My remote starter no longer works on the vehicle. My passenger side tire sounds as if the ball joint is loose in it.

1. no specific event leading up to the failure, just started out of the blue. 2. brake lights constantly lit when foot is off the brake pedal, cruise control works on and off, gear shift stuck in park, brake lights will sometimes go off when you hit the brakes 3. recall for the 2005 model suggested applying dielectric grease to the connector. We did that and it did not work. We replaced the stop lamp switch under dash and recalibrated the BCM at a dealership. Still malfunctioning.

I've had my 06 G6 for a little over three years and the car has been a nightmare. The car has been into the dealership at least 6 times for the same reason over the last few years only to have nothing done and be charged ridiculous prices. The main issue is a clunking noise in the steering when making a turn in any direction. The 1st time it happened I was told it was the gear box and had that replaced under warranty, and 6mths later the exact noise is back and my vehicle back in the dealership. Well this time it's not the gear box it's the shaft that needs to be replaced and it's not covered. Go figure! my next question to the dealer is how is it that my car is making the same noise it was making 6mths ago from the exact same area and it's something different now and not covered by the warranty" how do I know that you have competent workers and their repairing what really needs to be repaired" otherwise I wouldn't be here in this dealership every 6mths like im on the payroll. Someone needs to correct these issues before this thing turns into something tragic.

The car was purchased from auction in April of 2006. I have had the car three years now. From the time that I purchased the car I have had problems with it starting. It will turn over but dies immediately after it starts. It usually take three tries before it will start. Today I got in my car and turned the key nothing would come on, no lights no radio no noise nothing. I thought it was the battery. I tried it three times and then on the fourth time it started like normal. I checked the battery and it is fine. I have had it in the service department three times for this issue but because it would no do it at that time they could not determine what is wrong with it, the diagnostic test did not show anything. The service airbag warning also keeps dinging. I have taken it in and they reset it and said it was ok, now it keeps doing the same thing but it is not covered by warranty to have it serviced. I have had trouble with the powersteering also. There are times it will be extremely hard to turn and then in a few seconds it is extremely easy and now in the last few months I have had problems with the brakes. The brake pads were replaced two months ago and about two weeks after they were replaced they have started making a really loud squeaking noise and sometimes a grinding noise. Not sure what needs to be done since the brakes were just maintenance. The car has been very dependable but I am afraid that it will not stay that way for long.

I was driving my 2006 Pontiac G6 down the street and all of a sudden the power steering went out, I was unable to turn the car in any direction, this caused traffic to get backed up and me and my 1 year old stuck in the middle of the street, the car had to be towed to the nearest dealer where they then stated that my power steering is electrical and it has went out and to repair it they would have to change my rack and pinion which would cost over $800 to repair, which I don't have at this time, needless to say I am still unable to drive at the present time, I believe that this is recall worthy seeing that the car is only 3 years old, I also have heard other complaints about this same thing, please help!

I purchased the 06 in May 2006. In less than 6mths time both key fobs and the trunk release in the car stopped working. The dealership said they had the problems fixed, but the problem persists. Also, the car is hard to crank at times. It happened often in the past, but eventually stopped. Then on yesterday I had to 3 times to start my car before it cranked. Then today, I had to try 2X before it cranked. Something really needs to be done. I'm glad to know I'm not the only one experiencing this. GM should take note and accommodate everyone who has purchased their product. I'm not sure of the dates I began having trouble starting the vehicle, but it has occurred numerous times since I've had this car. Also, I've had to have my brakes replaced and it hasn't been close to a year and they are making a squeaking noise already.

The contact owns a 2006 Pontiac G6 GT. While driving the vehicle off the dealer lot at approximately 2 mph, there was an electrical failure with the power windows. In addition, the cell phone charger fuse continued to blow out. The dealer stated that they would make repairs under warranty. There was bubbling in the paint job that was also repaired under warranty. Whenever the vehicle is started, the stereo changes from xm fm to am. The screen for the xm radio is blank, the clock is always behind, and the fuel gauge never works properly. It is difficult to tell exactly how much fuel is in the vehicle. The engine ticks periodically and it sometimes stalls upon starting. The nuts in the door loosen every two weeks and make a loud clunking sound when they are coming loose. There is also something wrong with the power steering. The failure mileage was 20 and current mileage was 18,000. Update 09/10/08 the power steering failed and was replaced, but it still was not right. The drive shaft began to unusual noises. Updated 09/10/08.
