As I was accelerating onto the highway on-ramp, my car made a loud cracking sound and smoke immediately began to come out of from under the hood of my car. I was unable to accelerate and I steered the car to the highway shoulder. All the service and warning lights on my vehicle were now on. I immediately turned off my vehicle. After waiting a few minutes for the smoke to dissipate, I opened the hood and noted oil on the floor. Upon further inspection, it became clear that there was a large crack/hole in the engine block which appears to have been caused by a blown piston. My vehicle had approximately 63,000 miles and had just received an oil change 5 days prior. This caused me to file a claim with the company that provided the oil change. Per the report attached, the company's insurance inspector determined that the engine failure was not a result of the oil change. See inspector's report and pictures attached, with personal information redacted. The vehicle is currently not functional. Based on additional research, this I believe this may be a result of a timing chain issue that affects a variety of VW models. However, based on VIN lookup and discussion with VW customer care, my VIN has not yet been determined to be covered under the timing chain extended warranty stipulated in bulletin vwp-18-07.

The vehicle failed to move after entering into gear both reverse and drive. It was repaired by a VW dealership and a year later the same problem has occurred. Based on previous research it appears it may be part of a recall due to transmission issues. Had to pay over $7,000 for the repair

I have had my vehicle for less than two months. First my battery died on me so I replaced it but oddly before that I noticed when I would turn on my car I had to turn the steering wheel in a certain direction or shake it and when turning it off I would have to try several times before it would actually turn off. So today I got home from work and it just wouldnt turn off at all after calling the dealership and them telling me to put it first gear and Ram it into brake a few times it should work but but after 20-30 times raming my gear into park no success. I dont live in the best neighbor hood so the dealership suggested leaving it on and bring it in the morning finally I gave up and just about to walk in the house my husband gave it one more try and it turned but scared to turn it back on and im concerned it will lock permenatly and just like others I have to work to keep this car if I cant turn it off what do not only me but others in this situation do"????"

April 13th,2020 I took my car in to the local VW dealership to have it looked at. Road testing produced nothing, but P1732 and P173D codes were found. The service department called the VW tech line and VW indicated that a new transmission was the only option. My cost would be $9236.14. Afterwards, I stopped at the local independent german auto repair shop to have my paperwork looked at. This shop indicated that this was a new transmission design, intended for the hybrid, and that it was full of bugs. I was informed that VW knew about the issue and created a software bandage to fix it. The fix was not a permanent solution, rather to prolong the life of the car instead of VW fixing the issue under warranty. This shop also indicated that normal service done to cars would show a potential problem, but VW indicated to clear the code and not tell customers. Transmission I am not sure the exact date that the transmission issues began, but I do know that it was after March 27th, 2020. I know this because I worked all day for news America marketing and there were no issues with the car. On the day that the issue began, I had been using E-mode frequently and I noticed that the car was running hotter than normal. I stopped using E- mode. Currently the car is drivable. The check engine light does not come on regularly. When there is a problem, only odd gears are available. Gears 2,4,6, and reverse are not available. When the check engine light comes on, the car will immediately downshift to an odd gear. For example, 4th gear to 3rd. This results in the car slowing down quickly due to the high RPM. If the car is in 2nd, shifting to 1st causes the car to come to a stop over a short distance.

While driving on the highway, my car began to stop accelerating by itself. Once the RPM exceeded three, the epc light came on. Further on down the road, the check engine light came on, so I had the codes read and was told to replace the camshaft position sensor. The following day I had this part replaced and proceeded to drive on the highway again. The lights came on once again and an additional light came on as well. This time the car slowed down so much that I was almost hit trying to get to the shoulder of the highway.

While exiting an interstate onto a city street, I applied the brakes. As the Jetta slowed to about 15 mph, it experienced a sudden acceleration. The cause of this sudden acceleration is unknown. The sudden acceleration consisted of the engine increasing it's rev with a resulting increase in the speed of the vehicle. I applied the brakes harder and was able to bring the Jetta to almost a complete stop, however, the engine continued to rev at a high speed. I placed the Jetta in neutral and the engine's revving decreased to normal range. I placed the Jetta in drive and had no further problems. The next day I took the Jetta to my mechanic who ran a diagnostic program. No problem was identified. I have not experienced another episode of sudden acceleration.

The car had transmissions problems soon after I purchased it. Volkswagen said it repaired it when I brought it to the dealer for warranty service. Now a more serious transmission problem has occurred. At first it sort of felt like the gears were slipping, then it suddenly stopped moving while I was driving. This was a potentially dangerous situation. Luckily, I was able to pull over. To try to move again, I shifted into drive for extended periods of time, like 30sec or more, and the revs would go all the way to 10 but it would not move. Then it stopped working all together, and now it won't even turn on. I towed the car to the dealer and said it was the transmission. It seems clear that either the transmission was not repaired properly or it has a dangerously faulty design.

The vehicle skipped regularly when leaving a stop light. After a long trip requiring a significant amount of stop and go due to holiday traffic, the check engine light and hybrid malfunction system error lights came on. When I took it in to be checked, the dealership informed me that the transmission would need to be replaced. This seems to coincide with the errors that were part of a safety recall for other VW Jetta hybrids made in the same year as mine. However my vehicle did not fall under the same recall. The vehicle has less than 60K miles. I have done my research and it does appear that other 2014 Jetta hybrids have similar issues and are also not covered under the recall.

  • 70,000 miles
At about 70,000 miles, as I was driving home, the transmission on my car failed and I was only able to drive it in 1st gear. I was able to get it to the dealership, after which they told me this was due to the mechtronic unit in my hybrid transmission faulting. I was one the hook for about $940 a labor costs to get a new one replaced in my car so it can run. When I searched on google, I came to find out that the mechtronic unit failure is a known issue with this model and year of the Volkswagen Jetta hybrid and is due to it's faulty design. There was a recall however, it does not include my particular VIN. I am hoping that someday the recall is expanded to include my VIN as this has happened with several other 2014 Volkswagen Jetta hybrids. Very expensive thing to have fail so early in the life of the car.
