Long story fast. Car was looked over by local Ford Dealer at 200,000 miles this past April. Given clean bill of health. 4 months later I'm driving to work. Make the turn west off Wall St onto 30th St in Ogden, UT heading for I-15 and work in Salt Lake City. 2008 Mercury Mariner Hybrid abruptly comes to an engineless halt. Lights, instruments all ok, emergency flashers go to work right away. No arrows showing where power is being routed to on computer screen. Attempts to restart are fruitless. Towed to Ford Garage. Bad news, $11,000 for new batteries. What!? Bill Ford needs a new Mercedes? Not gonna' happen. Best Hybrid Batteries has what I need, $2149 + $140 shipping. Batteries installed. Car needs a High Voltage Switch as mine is bad. Best Hybrid Batteries sends one out without charge even for shipping and which FedEx changed delivery date from 10/17 to 10/18 (FedLate).

Now the really bad news. Car won't start. Has been checked for seized engine...no dice, all good. Another $350 for electrical diagnostics on top of the already $500 one I paid for to ensure that all was well before we installed the new battery pack. Ford dealer is getting around $1500 and they haven't a clue yet what's wrong. I have hopes on Monday.

Love this car. Third Ford Hybrid I've owned. Clean air sticker gets me in HOV lane. Love Fords. I have a 1997 F150 (now my daily commuter and only $18 a day to drive), My wife drives a 2008 Volvo XC70 (Ford product at the time. Has FOMOCO written all over it) and my son has a hand-me-down 2002 Volvo V70XC, 270,000 miles strong (another Ford Product back then). Strong VW is an aggressive dealer here in Utah. If Ford can't fix this, I may be driving a Tiguan.

Moral of story. Powerless car in heavy I-15 morning commute can foul up anyone's day. Could make for troublesome incident involving other cars and eventually lawyers.

Ford needs to step up and investigate these types of incidents with their hybrids before they carry through on their plans to produce all their lineup, from Mustang to F350 Super Duty in hybrid offerings.
