Well this is really not a defect just very bad design, my 2000 Mercury Sable has no shield of any kind over, on or around the fuel tank that hangs a foot or less off of the highway.I was driving my car down the road and never heard or saw anything on the road, but evidentally ran over something small and it ruptured the fuel tank on the car and I lost all of the gas while I was driving down the road, now that is a big hazard if I would have ran over a lit cigarette.....boom. They need to design a cover or shield of some sort to prevent a possible bad accident.
