The contact owns a 1996 Plymouth Grand Voyager. The contact stated that he has experienced computerized antilock brake failure several times. He replaced the computerized antilock brakes three times. Recently, in December of 2007, the contact experienced the failure while driving 55 mph on the highway. There was no braking power, but he was able to coast the vehicle off the road. The vehicle has not been repaired. The dealer estimated that the repair would cost $4,000. The current and failure mileages were 78,000.

The incident occurred with my wife driving the vehicle. My brother-in-law and 2 daughters, morgan 9 years old and madison, 5 years old, were passengers. They were traveling West on interstate 78 in New Jersey just past exit 11 when they smelled a slight unusual odor. At this location on the interstate is a mountain, known as "jugtown mountain." My wife put her foot on the brake to slow down, concerned about the odor and found the brake pedal went to the floorboard. Traveling downhill and gaining speed she panicked briefly, but managed to get to the right lane and used the emergency brake and lower gears to slow the vehicle down. As the interstate leveled out she pulled the vehicle over and contacted myself and aaa for towing service. We had the vehicle towed to clinton Chrysler Jeep Dodge in clinton, NJ. After inspecting the vehicle the service manager informed me that this happens often to many vehicles. He was very courteous and helpful, but I questioned his response as I thought it was unusual that a catastrophic failure of the vehicles brake system that could have resulted in a life threatening situation was something that occurred "often to many vehicles." He further explained that material can build up in the calipers and heat the brakes up, potentially resulting in brake fluid evaporating. He asked how long it was since my last brake work and I explained to him the two previous routine brake jobs and when the occurred. He stated that more than likely I would have to have brake pads and/or shoes again and they would check the master cylinder. With this being the extent of my knowledge of brakes I asked for a price quote to repair the vehicle.

Since purchase in 1996, the ABS failure light has repeatedly come on. There is almost always some type of "buzzing sound" when this occurs. There have been repeated repairs which were done under warranty and for which I paid. Each time, it was indicatedto me that there was some type of "yoke" around the steering column near the firewall which 'had to be replaced'. now, when the vehicle is started, the buzzing and light event(s) occur instantly, with the ABS light staying on while the vehicle is in operation. I've been told 'not to worry' by the dealer since I still have brakes. Yes, I have conventional brakes remaining, but I also have a noticable decrease in braking ability, especially in 'short stop' conditions. The issue I have with the windshield wipers seems to go hand in hand with this ABS problem. The wipers just 'come on' on beautiful, sunny days. I have made all the trips I intend to make to a service department which tells me this isn't covered by warranty. Either there is a true defect or someone does not have the competence to fix the problems.

This van has had many defects, the service tech. Said all the brake componets were going to be damaged and I had only hear the noise for two days. The shoes were damaging the drums and were attached to the drum, and they had to beat on them for at least a hour to get them off, the shoes were had the rivets missing on most of them. They were causing other brake conponets to come loose, this was way to early for back brake shoes to fail and damage all these parts. It could have caused me to have and accident.

Despite several dealership "fixes" gas tank shifts and thumps when accelerating or stopping sharply. All electric door locks had to be replaced due to electrical "vibration"-type noises when activating. Rear brakes have "hummed" when lightly braking since new. Problem evolved into surging. Needed a complete brake job at 40,000 miles due, I believe, to lack of dealership fix before hand.
