Solstice 2.4L L4

The rear ends in these cars are junk. As is the Cadillac CTS & STS which share this rear end. It's noisy, with a big clunk every gear change. There is a massive back lash. My car had a seal or some dealer work before I got it, but the big clunk is still there. I just ordered another rear end... if they have one. I'll swap it out at some time.

There is no info on these rear ends for rebuilding, or any parts available to do so except for clutch plates. These rear ends were bad when installed. Mine has 57,000 miles now and I'm apprehensive about taking any trips in it. Why? it's a car, it's made to go places... it should have been reliable when new but many had this issue right away. Mine has had the clunk since I have had it, I'm pretty sure it's always been there as most are like this one.

GM needs to step up and furnish some good rear ends for these cars under recall. Ive rebuilt many rear ends, engines and trans as a tech. I have never seen anything like the issues these have, and have never seen a rear end with this massive amount of gear back lash, along with about zero rebuild info available for them. I can see why the CTS & STS have more issues with this rear end as they have 2x or 3x as much power and weight. If this tiny car has issues with it... it's for sure junk!! And the consumer did not have that in their plan when they bought an expensive car. I wish I could enjoy my car, but that's hard to do, not knowing if you will be walking back or not.

Solstice 2.4L V-Tec

I have had the car garaged since the noise began (2008). This began immediately after a recall to replace a rear (u-joint component). There is a significant "clunking" noise when starting out or when turning the vehicle. The car still has very low miles; never been driven in winter or in rain. It's like new in all respects, aside from the rear end noise.

I have no idea what could have happened with the recall repair. I suspect that this is the problem that happens when the recall repairs are not made. My suspicion is that the work was not done in the first place. I am planning to have an independent shop inspect the vehicle to determine if this is true. I love the car and I just want it repaired so I can drive it. I am afraid to drive more than a few short miles; I fear that something will break loose in the rear of the car and do a great deal of damage to the car.

Can you help me with this issue? Thank you for your attention to this.
