A year and a 1/2 ago we started having issues with the steering in our Saturn Outlook. I took it to the dealership and was told the power steering pump was fine but that I needed a new gear box and a hefty price tag of $1700. We didn't/still don't have that type of pocket change so didn't get it fixed. As many recalls as we have had on this vehicle, I figured it was just a matter of time before this too would be recalled.

Well, sure enough a couple weeks ago we rec'd a letter about the "extended" coverage on the power steering pump. I called the dealership I had originally took it to, to set up a time to have the pump replaced. I was immediately told that "it may be the gear box" and I didn't like that answer as I had already been told that if it was in fact the gear box, driving it as long as we had, it would have locked up on us. SO...I called a Chevy dealership in a small town close to me. Not once did they say anything about the gear box, we dropped it off last Tuesday and picked it up Wednesday w/a new power steering pump.

The steering was just like new! I was so excited that I could now turn our vehicle w/one hand instead of my whole body! Then, this past Saturday, 3 days after picking it up, we went to leave and noticed it was leaking A LOT of power steering fluid all over our garage floor. My husband checked the level and sure enough it was EMPTY!

I would like to know why this hasn't been recalled (rack and pinion) with so many having the exact same issues!? I have a feeling it's because of the cost...they have no problem recalling the cheaper things to fix but when it comes to something major, it has to come out of the consumers pocket! We are taking it back to the shop today and are hopeful it's just the "o" ring or something that is loose...there is NO reason a 2009 vehicle w/the type of rack and pinion on these vehicles we have that we should be having these issues and especially having to come out of pocket for GM's bad design!!
