Impreza 2.5I SE 2.5L V4

  • Automatic transmission
  • 155,000 miles

I thought Subaru made a good car. I thought wrong, or just got unlucky. About 2 months prior I had the head gaskets replaced. Then I noticed a huge increase in oil consumption. About a quart every 250 miles. That was a loose bolt on the valve cover gaskets. That improved it to a quart every 750 miles. I work at a dealership, and one of our mechanics determined it was worn rings. After 150,000 miles. (For comparison my old '84 F-150 had 400,000 miles on its 302 before we had to redo the rings) So we had to rebuild the engine with new piston rings and connecting rod bearings. It still burns a quart every 1200 miles or so. I suppose its normal for a boxer engine to burn oil.

Overall this care has treated me well until this problem. Head gasket blew and caused oil burn off. The leak was slow enough none ever reached the ground but enough to have to add more oil every other day. Tech showed me the gasket and stated there are many problems with the head gaskets Subaru used. He noticed head gaskets needing to be replaced anywhere from 40K to 120K miles. The mileage was about right so I had the timing belt replaced as well.

At a little over 81000 miles my car blew the head gaskets. Subaru fixed it under warranty, however the car has been burning oil since then. Subaru of America refuses to acknowledge that there is a problem with the car. I am considering taking legal action against Subaru over this. I will never buy another Subaru again.
