2000 Volvo S80 4 dr. Erratic idling/surging with engine light coming on.leads to stalling out on major highways on many occasions narrowly avoiding life threatening traffic accidents trying to pull "dead" car to side of road. Brought car to Volvo dealer and car was repaired for $1332.50. Repair included replacement of: Electronic throttle body($588.50) with software download($28) to allow ETM to function along with gasket($4). Replacement of mass air flow meter($234.21) total labor/parts= $1254.71 + $75.29 tax + $2.50 enviromental fee??= $1332.50 I unfortunately do not have old part. Please note that now @ 30,000 miles after replacemnt on 12/1/2003 the electronic throttle body is showing the "signs" of a need for replacement again.

At 70mph my car said reduced performance, and within 30 sec. My cruise control failed, the car reduced to 5mph, and there was no acceleration. I was in 5 lanes of rush hour traffic doing 70-80mph. An eighteen wheeler skidded approx. 50 feet in order to avoid hitting me. He then had to block off two lanes of traffic to assist me to the shoulder. My car would only coast. It was a near death experience for me. I'm thankful my children were not with me. After being turned off over night, my husband attempted to drive it to the Volvo dealership. He experienced the same. We were told that it was due to a computer chip malfunction. A chip which controls the throttle, fuel-injection, and cruise control. Wow! the service rep. "we haven't seen anymore problems after replacing the chip". we asked why has this not been recalled. The rep. Said "there have to be so many accidents and fatalities reported, before they will recall it". this has left me very disturbed, and reluctant to ever drive a Volvo again. I feel sure if it hadn't been for my quick use of the hazard lights, it could have been fatal. The truck driver also concurred. I do not want this to happen to anyone else. They may not be so lucky.

Similar to a NHTSA complaint number 873996, this vehicle (2000 Volvo S-80 T6) shut down during highway driving at 70 mph. Console message status indicated "engine system service urgent" after coasting to safe location, engine would not re-start until cooled. After starting, the message status remained the same, but cruise control was inoperable, automatic transmission would not operate above 2000 RPM in both automatic -or- manual mode. Early symptoms of this problem may have been falsely manifested as poor automatic transmission shifting performance in 3rd, 4th, and overdrive gears. The symptoms have persisted until failure since the vehicle was purchased. As of 10/4/03, dealer had replaced the entire electronic throttle body (carburetor) at consumer cost of $926.70 and recommended cruise control module replacement estimated at $860 original vehicle history including complete transmission replacement at 9000 miles is available from owner or dealer. Additionally, the electronic throttle module (carburetor) is available for failure analysis. Complaint is an addto email consumer letter regarding an internet voq request that was filed in reference to 2000 Volvo S80. Volvo experiencing engine surges. 10041220 is the complaint in which this email consumer letter is being added to.
